hi arthur,
as soon as you hit the big "60" you are entitled to a senior citizens travel pass
you can use it anywhere in england after 9.30 am weekdays and any time at weekends and bank holidays
you should apply to your home district council - who may allow you to use it in your own council area from 9.00 am weekdays
the card is NOT valid in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland (same as theirs are not valid in england - thats devolution for you!)
you can use it on all regular service buses, and a very few city sightseeing buses. Not usually valid on trams or trains. (some councils may have special arrangements)
on boarding, some bus company's drivers may ask you to state your destination (always a good idea if you dont know the area) so they can calculate how much to claim from the local council. all drivers will need to see your travel card
one last thing, most bus drivers refer to senior citizen travel pass holders as "twirlies" - as in getting on the bus at ten to nine on a weekday and saying "am i
too early to use this?" this happens a lot. the answer is yes - because the ticket machine keeps a record of the time and place each ticket was issued - and the driver will get his knuckles rapped by the management!
