Budget busting Scotch Broth Soup

:)Bees Knees Cook in a Camper Van/home made Scotch Broth Soup

Did you know that most butchers are happy to give away bones from butchered meat rather than have to pay to have them taken away. Our butcher will happily give us bones from butchered meat to make stock with. When ever we ask for Lamb bones, the bones always have enough meat on them that you could cook into other dishes. The following recipie is a favorite of ours.

1 kilo Lamb bones
1 large of the following vegetables: Carrot, onion, turnip, parsnip, celery stick , potato, & half a swede.
3 large cabbage leaves (dark green outer leaves if poss.)Finely shredded
300ml of water.
cup full of Pearl Barley
knob of butter
salt and pepper to taste

Method

1) Roast the Lamb bones in a hot oven (gas mark 6 or 7, 180c 160F)
until browned and meat on bones comes away easily from the bone.
2) De glaze the roasting pan with the water and save until later.
3) Dice all the vegetables & slice the cabbage leaves
4) With the knob of butter saute until lightly browned all the vegetables and add the lamb
5) Add the water from the roasting pan and the cup of Pearl Barley and simmer for 20 minutes, stiring occasionally.
6) make sure the vegetables are soft and cooked through and season.

serve the soup with a chunk of bread.

Even easier Scotch Broth for those without an oven in MH
Bung all ingredients into a pressure cooker with 1 litre water and cook for 20 mins (leaving windows open!) - I use broth mix instead of just plain pearl barley (dried mix of barley, lentils peas etc.). Then take bones out, pick off any wee bits of meat and add back to pan, season and serve.

Added bonus - bones soft enough to give to dog!

:eek:Cooked bones and dogs are a recipe for one thing only, a disaster!

Please don't.

That's usually chicken bones - we never give our dogs them - but pressure cooked lamb bones are very soft and chewy. Had no probs so far.

You can safely give your dogs raw chicken wings, we have done for a long time but I agree about cooked bones. If they have been boiled until they are soft, then I do not think there will be a lot of nutrition left in them anyway. i could be wrong as we are learning all the time.

Ha nice one, I was actually daft enough to click on that link:eek:
Copy your thread to the numpty one. You now qualify.

ps: A lot of people actually tried to contact comparethemeerkats.com. Hold your hand up people if you were one of them.

I Thought the hard stuff was a Blue Job!

I thought this thread was about the hard stuff! :)

"Blue jobs are for men and Pink Jobs are for women!" Not bothered if you think that this comment is sexist, so dont go there, but whether we like it or not, some jobs are better done by men as are some jobs done better by women" In the absence of knowledge of technical or "Hard Stuff" I wanted to contribute to the site with something I thought would be useful. I did wonder if I was going to start off a revolution by posting recipes, but as I'm not technically minded & we have not got our motor home yet, I thought that me posting a couple of recipies would be interesting and useful.

I guess from your comments that this sort of contribution is not welcome.
As a Green Horn, I guess I'll get to know what people find interesting and useful, whilst still leaving the "Hard Stuff" for thems that know what they talking about.
Apologies all! Guess I'd better butt out until we do our trip to Scotland.

Well, I thought the "Hard Stuff" was a blue job!

I thought this thread was about the hard stuff! :)
:eek:Some things can only be done by men (Hence Blue Jobs) and some things can only be done by women (Hence Pink jobs)!

I'm not bothered if you find this comment sexist so don't go there. But! in the absence of any "Hard Stuff" Knowledge and the fact that we are still saving up for our first motor home, I still wanted to contribute to the site and be an active member. Especially as we will be going away on our first ever motor home holiday in November.

I can see from peoples comments over all, that recipes are not really what you guys want to see on this site, My Apologies. I'll butt out until our trip in November when I've hopefully got something more interesting and pertinent to write about.

Given the thread title of "Budget busting scotch" I genuinely thought for a second it was about the Scotish drink of choice! However if anybody wants recipes go here BBC - Food for thousands, I use it all the time! Some can be made in minutes. But "I can see from peoples comments over all" don't be too sensitive!

I would rather read a thread on food than one on golf.

As Winston Churchill said when asked if he liked golf, "it spoils a good walk".

Why not convince the government to turn all golf courses into wildcamping areas?

You carry on with your recipes greenbees. The ones who live on crappy fast junk food will not follow the thread anyway and will die soon from eating chemically enhanced rubbish.

Now, now Arbuthnot Jebediah. Just because I have criticised the totally nonsensical game (not sport, I must add) which has got between you and your wits, you have spat the dummy out.

Now make your mind up, do you want thousands of green acres made available for recreation or do you want to continue batting a ball with a stick while dressed up like Bertie Wooster?

I myself have a mental disability, it is my sense of humour. One or two members have already discovered this. Physically I am perfect unlike some of the members here who have recently been shown in photos (no names).

Take 2 of the green tablets the nurse gave you and lie down in a darkened room for a couple of months.

Best regards

Your bestest friend in all the world,

Painmate.

ps; say owt about my whippets again and your dead.
