Bt fon

I've got BT internet connection, and have signed up for BT FON, which is supposed to allow me internet connection in thousands of places in this country and abroad. I've looked at their maps of where the 'hotspots' are, and there certainly seems to be lots of them.
Have any of you guys or gals ever heard of it..or ever been connected to the internet through this system. It sounds brill, and the answer to my problem of getting online when we on the continent...if it works.
Cheers,

Jackie:)

Yes, I'm on this. Complete waste of time. I suspect most members have the old white bt box which really doesn't have enough strength to send the signal out of the house.

Also had many failed attempts even in town/city centres. I now don't bother with it.

Hi Jackie,
I have used BT FON in UK, during my last trip to Scotland, using my laptop, but now purchased a Blackberry on Vodaphone, this can be used on the go, as long as a signal is possible. Not gone into the price of it when in Europe, but for now appears ok.
My BT FON is available if passing through LLangyniew near Welshpool, should you need it:)

Happy Camping:)
Bill.

Hold on Jackie--I thought you where 'blackburying' in another post?--with custard!!!:p
Bye for now

used this all over the uk for three months this summer , never had a problem getting connected , brilliant system .....as an overseas FON member I can use this , just the same as you can use FON when you find it

of course , if you think you will get good reception when shielded by the motorhome body you are going to be very disappointed ; easy solution ...buy a wifi dongle plus a 3 metre usb extension cable ; switch off internal wifi , install dongle , put dongle on the roof through a roof vent ,cannect to laptop with extension cable ...et voila , you may need to fiddle it around a little but the range is much better ; even better , put it in a direction cantenna and point !

You just beat me to it with the cantenna remark as it is my next project. :(

When I am finished, I will have an upside down rotary clothes drier from my garden, a sky sat dish (cost nothing), a cantenna and a Rutland wind genny all fixed to my upside down clothes drier.

I have sent details off to Dragon`s Den and I am sure that I will be offered millions of pounds for the idea of bringing all that technology into one unit. :D

At the risk of inviting unsavoury remarks from you guys , can any of you give simple directions for making a 'cantenna'..yes 'Maingate' I have googled it, and looked at various 'methods of construction'...but still baffled
Surely one of you clever clogs can oblige this 'simple' female. ;)
Thanks,

Jackie :)

I will try to keep this as untechnical as possible. :D

You get a tin can, put some fittings on it, wire it to your laptop and turn it (its directional) until you pull in wifi from up to 1 km away. :)

Simples.

If you cannot find the technical details by google, then go to the Motorhome Facts Forum (its like this one but sensible). There is a thread on there about wifi and the info I read was a link on one of the posts. I should have saved it but I will do next time. At one time, people used to make them from Pringle containers but these have been superceded by coffee cans.

BTW Lidl have an offer on xxl size tins of Chilli con Carne from Nov. 2nd and those tins look the business (£1.09)

BTW2 They have 12v Halogen headlight bulbs £3.99 a pair.

Beware guys. You wouldn't do anything Illegal Maingate.

A laptop user was collared by police community support officers in west London recently for allegedly pilfering someone else's Wi-Fi.

Local rag The Richmond and Twickenham Times reports that the 39-year-old man was spotted one morning working outside a house in Prebend Gardens, in leafy Chiswick.

After admitting using the broadband connection he was taken to the nearest cop shop and bailed until October pending further investigation by the Met's computer crime unit.

Using even an unsecured Wi-Fi network is an offence under the Communications Act 2003 and could be a breach of the Computer Misuse Act in some circumstances.

Despite not having secured a conviction yet or even charged the man, DC Mark Roberts of the computer crime unit said: "This arrest should act as a warning to anyone who thinks it is acceptable to illegally use other people's broadband connections."

Creams I am well a seagull tonight then ....I have been using an unsecured network for the last 10 days !!

TBH I am not in the Uk, however should I be arrested a bacon Buttie at XMAS will be welcomed.
