Ok Guys I really need some help. whilst driving back home from Devon on saturday, the steering started to judder at 50mph,Felt like the nearside wheel was about to come off,I checked the nuts and they were as tight as anything,Now when i set off again it started again, Put it into neutral and the juddering stopped, put it back in gear and it started again, limped into the services and called out AA, he said he could find nothing wrong, then suggested the gearbox or powersteering or driveshaft, and then ordered a wrecker to take me home. Today i drove it to the garage and it is making knocking noise on the nearside front. Any suggestions as to what it could be and costs of the three i have mentioned. It is a 1992 Talbot express 2-5 turbo diesel. Starting to worry about costs.

By the way I used Insurance Choice breakdown cover.Cant fault them from start to finish,Best £149-00 ever spent i think.

I would rule out power steering personally...

was there any unusualy noise prior to the failure? if there was could be a wheel bearing...

failing CV joint would give these symptoms, as would a failing gearbox :(

Do a few simple checks before delving into the gearbox.

Make sure that none of the tyres have delaminated/flat spot - easily missed.
See if any of the weights used to balance the wheels are obviously missing, inside and outside of the rims.
Have a look at the tailshaft support bearings, move the tailshaft from side to side and if it moves at all.

After that.......

Judder

Might be the drive shaft constant velocity(CV) joint. If it was "clicking" on stearing
full lock and or you can see oil on the inside of the drive hub.Good luck

Dont panic Bigboak;), I had a similar experience with my Talbot, I think that after making a turn using full lock and mounting a kerb, the nearside driveshaft drifted out of its socket at the gearbox end. This meant the van was only being driven on the offside wheel whilst the nearside shaft rattled about in the rubber gaiter:eek:.
Get under and feel for any sideways motion on the driveshaft as mine just slid back into place and no further problems.
I would also check the 2 torsion bars that terminate under the front bumper as they have been known to vibrate loose at the locknut.

Good Luck and keep us posted:)

Thanks lenny dont know anything about mechanics, going back to the garage in the morning, will let you know.

Have just heard a similar post on a car forum. Same symptoms, and it turned out to be a drive shaft that was the problem. But as a previous poster has said, check the simple things first. Balancing, tracking and all suspension joints, bushes and the wheel bearings.

the drivers side drive shaft has a support bearing section
about halfway along because of it's length these tend to go
and can sound bad as the shaft is no longer supported
happened to me some time ago easy job to replace
if that's the problem

Drive shaft.

Hi guys, rang the garage this morning, and it was the driveshaft, £100.00 fitted for a new one. Thanks for all the replies and advice guys. Hope to be of help sometime. Anyone need advice about home electrics give me a shout. Time served spark.

;)Hi bigboac, having just read the post i can feel certain that its the driveshaft:D

Glad you sorted your problem out.

Garage used.

Hi all the garage i used was my local college, they use this to teach the apprentices, all done to high standard and much cheaper than a local garage i think. Give your local college a ring and see if they do it there, Also The local ambulance stations do services and mots i just found out. I am in Blackburn but im sure it will be the same all over.:D

Glad that you got it sorted. I am also happy that I diagnosed the problem correctly.

drive shaft.

Got BIG BERTHA back from the garage took it on a test run and cant find fault with it. YAHOO. A big thank you to all have advised on here, booked her in for a complete check over as its was such good service.

hi i have the same problem with the driveshaft bearing. while underneath checking a few things i found the driveshaft loose and it looks like the shaft support bearing has been missing since i got he van (2 years). im about to replace the cv boots and wonder if it is easy to split the driveshaft to do both at the same time. got to get it off the road for a while and do work to it as ive just been enjoying it for the last 2 years. thanks .

Hi a lot of garage's now use a spreader to put on the cv boots and don't split the driveshafts anymore
yours Brian

I know you have sorted the problem , but thought I'd add something .

We had exactly the same problem on "bobeds" talbot express based elddis ,It was caused by mounting the kerb/driveway on full lock , caused the inner CV joint to come out of the gearbox , The retaining c spring clip had lost its springyness , so it kept sliding out from the differential , The replacement spring clips are available. ,In total with grease etc it Cost about £10 to repair.

job done !
