Have a great time, Its widely reported on this site that Brittany is a haven for MH's, I know from our own 2 visits that places to park up legitamatly are plentiful. Also this time of year you will not have any problems just pulling up at a campsite (if open) if you want.

Don't mis the aquarium at Brest one of the best in the world.
Concarneau the old medeavial town is also pretty special.

We also liked Pont Aven for art.

Enjoy its a fantastic area

Don't pass up the chance of visiting some of the Normandy beaches and Museums on the way across to Brittany, well worth a visit.
Small Aires available at Arrowmanches, very interesting place, with some great rare footage on film inside the Museum.
Enjoy your trip, pity it wasn't at the end of June, when we are having a smallish meet in those parts.

Happy Camping:) and welcome to the site.

Hi,
this is the Meet, details hopefully will be revealed after this coming weekend at the Hayfield Meet. Zeezee and myself will sit down(over a pint or two) and with the Aires book and map will sort out some kind of itinary.
Some interest is already shown and you will be most welcome to join us for as long as you like.
It could be a truly international event if Belgian (Leo) turns up.
The protocol is enjoy yourselves, if you want to go off and do your own thing for the day, not a problem.

Happy Camping:)
Bill.

Hi Bill,
If, when, you'll overcome your future hangover :p and you have a date fixed;
I'll try to be there somewhere, sometime. ;) and we open up a bottle of calvados :) (protocol item # 1 ):D
Best info about aires is to be found on: CAMPINGCAR-INFOS
Meanwhile have a good time,
Leo

Brittany is a haven for motorhomes. no need for camp sites.
It might be a bit early in the year to pick an aires book up, but try the book shops when You are there. The camping club sell one of the books but they may not have them in yet,

you won't have to travel far to find somewhere to park, there are plenty of chances for wild camping as well

Enjoy!!

Thanks for that jann, already got the new Aires book, treated myself to an English version this time:D I always enjoy my visit's, and won't be stopping on any campsites.

Happy Camping:)

Dont miss the megaliths around Carnac, some are on a par with Stonehenge IMHO. The history and folk lore of Brittany and Cornwall are so intertwined its like suddenly having a lot of Cornish/Arthurian legends explained. There is so much history its hard to point to other "must sees" - maybe some of the medieval towns and villages. If you have n't been to Mont St Michel its an experience. I still cant decide if ours was good or bad with about 500 other campervans in le parking and another 30,000 people on foot.

There are a lot of "ville fleurieu" (sp?) in Brittany and most of them are attractive places to visit - maybe too early for the flower displays, but they still make some pleasant detours and are off the tourist tracks.

St Nazaire's submarine museum was worth the visit, if only to see how thick the concrete was that they built the pens with - no wonder the bombs bounced off!!

We loved the rugged coastline.

Local beers and cider are better than the imported (from other French regions) wines.

Food - try everything on offer and you cant go wrong - eat whatever the locals are eating. We only ate one a la carte meal the rest were from le menu (fixed price) and whilst the a la carte was twice as expensive it was certainly NOT twice as good. We also found that eating midday was easier than trying to find a restaurant open out of season in the evening.

Buy a large scale Michelin map of the region and you'll get a host of little extras - scenic roads, historic sites, out of the way parking areas, etc etc.

Have a great trip.

Although its not Brittany Just a short distance inland lays the river Mayenne, from Angers to Mayenne Its really picturesque. Its possible to wild by most of the locks or villages.
I managed the boatyard at Entrammes for 4 years and found the locals really friendly and helpful. The lockkeepers take a real pride in their locks.
Last spring I called in at the base at Entrammes where its posible to stop for a couple of days. Opposite the base the Abbey Port Salut is worth a visit where you can still buy the Port Salut cheese, but which is now manufactured 100 mts further up the road.
It really is worth a detour.
If anybody wants any info will be pleased to help.

Bonjour Nolly,
A few years ago we wildcamped in Origné at the 'Plan d'eau de la Courbe'
near the Braissé locks. Your so right the Mayenne river is a nice part of France, worth visiting. And Port Salut is a marvel, not only for the cheese.
If I only knew then you managed the boatyard in Entrammes we could have met. ;)
A la prochaine, le votre

Welcome to our world! The best info for Aires in Brittany is on the website: CAMPINGCAR-INFOS but wildcamping is possible almost anywhere. If you have problems finding anywhere, just ask the police where it is best to stop - you'll probably be escorted to the best sites. Britanny is a fabulous place to spend time - with wonderful local cider and seafood. You will not need to use campsites at all - unless you want to. Places to see will depend upon your interests but the standing stones at Carnac are worth a visit and most of the beaches are great (although maybe not at this time of year). The medieval village of Locronoan might be of interest to you - and you could take the boat out to the Isle de Sein - depends how long you've got. But one thing is sure - you'll want to go back!

Bonjour Leo.
Yes had you have called in at the base you would have been made very welcome, We encouraged motorhomes as much as the boats, to us it was as much promoting tourisme for the region as meeting like minded people.
We often cycled to the plan d' eau at Braissè lock for a picknick it's a loverly spot. Problem was monsieur et madam èclusier were very hospitable and cycling back up the tow path could get a little precerious after a bottle or 2 of Anjou rouge.
Sadly the boatyard now as far as I know is still closed but the parking is still available. Going to see if I can dig out a photo.
A la prochaine.

Hi Flipperdipper, I lived there for many years, best place in Europe for motorhoming, yes the aquarium at Brest is great and they provide free overnight parking on a dedicated carpark but you must be there before 6.00pm , on a practical point make sure you have fuel by midday Saturday, garages often close and the 24hour pumps don'r accept UK cards. If you're in Morlaix Saturday morning there's a good market for local seafood and produce and most towns have a market some time in the week. Supermarkets close all day Sunday except the small ones (500sq m I think) which open till 12.00. Seafood is the speciality and really good value, aires are plentiful, remember no awnings allowed. Take cheddar (its expensive) and bacon (its too thin) tea bags and baked beans (not the same) and salad cream (rare), everything else is on a par or cheaper, if you use supermarkets in tourist areas they have a British section but twice as much money. The weather is much like Cornwall so take wet gear, post which way you're going over for more info, have a nice holiday.

Thanks for all the info and helpful suggestions we're really looking forward to our ferry trip tomorrow. I'm sure we'll get the hang of it eventually and in no time at all become experts at this camping lark. Regards, Liam.
