just got my quote for this winter .out november back next april 1 adult 1 dog. car and caravan 639 quid ,up 70 from last year. thats plymouth -santander return.
if i go plymouth -roscoff 461quid so not worth doing that and driving through france . its santander again for me. at 350 m yto dover and the drive through france it must cost 750 quid at 17 mpg . and save 2000ml wear n tear. they are on line now.
cheers alan.

It is worth taking the Brittany Ferries 'Home Owners Abroad' membership out. Initially it seems expensive but you normally get your membership fee back in discount on the first return trip of the year anyway, and any subsequent trip that year then the discount really pulls in to advantage.

Subsequent years the membership renewal is lower, so that makes it even better :D

We reckon to save about £120 per return crossing from Portsmouth to Cherbourg with having the membership. It even gives you some other small perks like free breakfasts if you overnight cross etc.

Don't let the name 'Home Owners Abroad' put you off - it makes no difference if you have a house over there or not, you can still have a membership!

Tempting' but debatable if even with the discount whether it would be more economical than Dover/Calais. I've been quoted nearly £400 Portsmouth or Poole to Cherbourg or Caen, and around £70 Dover/Calais.
So even taking off the discount the price difference may well pay for fuel and wear and tear for the extra 300 return miles. Also where you live in UK and destination has a bearing on where you cross La Manche, I'm assuming a trip to Portugal/Spain.

it gets better if you take it to spain .got to save some miles wear n tear. the best is if you brake something and have to limp home the spanish dont seem to mind but driving through france the gendarms are a bit strict. only takes couple of nights with spain. but for me its the drive to dover that really puts the finishing no thanks on. cheers alan.
joining b.f. club is 100 each year 100. could be worth it but then i dont really use it only winter .

On a particular RV forum most of the emphasis is on how quick you can get to Spain via toll roads then get on to an RV specific site with freehold or leased plots, then sit out the winter season, then charge back home. They don't stop more than one night in France' I think mainly because they can't get into the aires or supermarket carparks. This wouldn't suit me, but each to their own.
Personally I don't mind how long it takes to get to/from Spain and I don't mind relaxed driving. 3 or 4 months in Spain especially on the Costas is plenty for me.
vwalan I think when you say the Gendarmes are "strict" it's when they stop and search looking for cigs from GIB and ANDORRA and Kif from MAROC, so if you don't do such then the Gendarmes are just an inconvenience. I often get stopped in the Pyrenees and on the RN10 rest areas, never on on the frontier.... crafty those Gendarmes.

it can be along way through france though ifyourwheels are a bit lobb sided or something . drive in the night in spain the trfficco are either asleep or drunk and cant be bothered so long as you dont have a smack. remember france and the drive from dover adds 1,000ml for me. where do you hide your kiff then ?its the 10 moroccan stowaways and 2 ton of resin thats the problem get it wrapped in chocolate wrappers and tell them its a late xmas present for the grandkids .ha ha . only bring women over they make really good slaves . sorry i mean house keepers . ha ha . i get searched in spain every tear and verry often again in plymouth . best expect it then you know not to bring any contraband . i like travelling not watching those old grey walls around me.(think theres a song about that.)got any ribbon. see you soon summer is only round the corner .winter will be left behind . cheers alan.

I've had a few prospective illegal immigrants offering bucks, dope and anything else at Tangier dockside just to get a lift over the Strait.
The Trafficos don't go out at night they're afraid of the dark.
As for Resin there's a not a lot of glass fibre in it so no good for bodge repairs.
I worked in Dubai for a while and I know their rich nationals bring women virtual slaves into the UK no questions asked, so you should have no problem bringing a few back from Maroc.

the biggest problem is when you do exchange your wife /girlfriend for 20 camels .they arent so keen on letting you bring them in through the customs . it does appear they dont need a passport as they have hooves not claws so you would think it .ll be ok. i normally exchange mine for some blankets or some fresh fish atleast they are useful. then get a young moroc girl to clean and tidy .they love it. cheers alan.
