Britains Top 10 scenic routes

Ok I am picking your brains here.......... but it is a bit of fun too ;)

I am writing an article for Motor Caravan Magazine on the Top 10 most scenic routes in Great Britain. It must be ones that folks have driven their vans through, so easily passable with no width/height restrictions. It must be WOW, drop dead gorgeous scenery right out the window, from the comfort of your drivers seat - and truly awesome. No hikes up mountains or only visable from a microlight! Britains most scenic road routes.

So where are these roads and what time of year is best to go there with your vans?

Once I have all the ideas in from this forum and other groups then the Top 10 will be obvious. Right now I have my favourites but there must be other places where I have not been that are just as worthy. That's why I need as much input to this as possible so we can genuinely say they are THE BEST.

Over to you guys...... it will be interesting to see the debate :)

cheers
Janet

One of my favourites would be Glengary view point A87

It needs to be a route not just a view point - so views all along the road between a & b.

I'll look it up though as there is a possibility it might be part of a good route. Thanks :)

Keep 'em coming !

I might be "way off track" here but you are not going to find scenic routes UNLESS you go off the main roads.
Having just driven 650 plus miles along the roads of Scotland last week I would be hard pushed to give you a "WOW" route along the roads that have NO restriction on height and width. (I am including single track roads here).
The 10 best routes would only be your choice of routes submitted so I'm afraid you are on a "hiding to nothing" in trying to collate such a list.
Don't get me wrong, I hope you get lots of submissions but frankly I think it is an impossible task.

Fort William to Kyle of Lochalsh the A87 past the 5 sisters our No1
a slight detor to the top of the Ratagen pass or go to Skye this way via the Kylerhea ferry and back by the road bridge.

Yes this would be another favorite alf was on this road two days ago:)

I don't mind sharing my favourite routes or camping places with friends but I don't want to have them published in a magazine, for "strangers" to make use of and people to make money out of.
If you want to write articles for magazines - use your own knowledge, I assume you'll be getting paid for your copy?

Sir Matt

Drive along Sir Matt Busby Way in Manchester and look out of the window at the theater of dreams (Old Traford). Just a little joke!!!!!!!!!!:D

Ive got to agree with the road passed the 5 Sisters. WOW.

How about the road down Glen Coe, I am a bit biased because of the mountaines I've climbed. Try not to crash wilst looking at the views & the red deer. WOW again:)

Dingwall to Skye via Kyle of Lochalsh. Has it all, Summer or Winter just as long as it is not suffering from Scotch Mist.

Just consulted my Australian wife and her favourites were;

Following the coast as closely as possible (A, B and C roads) from Bristol down to Lands End.

Weaving along the South Downs from Chichester to Eastbourne trying to use B and C roads.

B and C roads that follow the course of the old Wey and Arun Canal from Arundel to Guildford.

Following the coast roads from Gt Yarmouth to Kings Lynn.

A loop from about Godstone along the North Downs to Guildford, then back through The Weald visiting the smaller villages - Gomshall, Ewhurst, Ockley, Newdigate, Leigh, Reigate.

The roads that follow the approximate route of Hadrians Wall.

Roads that follow the course of the Kennet and Avon Canal from Bristol to the Thames.

North and Central Wales - everywhere :)

North of a line between Glasgow and Edinburgh - everywhere :)

I always like the M6 up through the Lake district. That said there are more conventional attractive routes in the Lake district OFF the motorway.

Tco

Hardknott Pass - Lake district
Honister Pass - Lake district

A93 / A939 between Braemar and Grantown-on-spey

Cross Top - the pass between Askrigg & Mucker - Yorkshire

Hardly original, and a bit tricky in any MH that might be a tad...portly... but my fave route is the mountain road through the Elan Valley in Wales, from Rhyader to Devils Bridge :)

I think New Rover is wrong in what he says, There are many excellent drives on main roads if you know where they are, The main road from Ullapool to Durness, think its the A835, A837, A894 then A838. The B869 Drumbeg road. Shieldaig to Applecross. The circular route from Drumrunie to Altandhu then on to Achiltibuie. The A87 from Bun loyne to Kyle of Lochalsh.....Bob

Hey guys - thanks for all the ideas. Some of them are already on the list but others will be sussed out.

I just thought it was a bit of fun to get your opinons and input.. the more the merrier is my view. But apologies to those of you who found this unacceptable..........

Britians' Top 10 Scenic Routes.

:DHi Flower3Bird...You will always get the "party-poopers"..ignore them. If you are covering Great Britian, I presume you will include N. Ireland ? If so, how about this route...WOW & WOW. From Larne (Co Antrim), head north on the A2. When you are on this road, you are on the Antrim coast road famous for its beauty & for its access to the Nine Glens of Antrim.
The route takes you through..Ballygally (nice Inn here), Glenarm, Carnlough, Glenariff, Cushendall ( between these towns is Red Bay, a favourite stop point for craft from Campbeltown in Argyll, just across the North Channel). You then hit Cushendun & Ballycastle. Vibes are that the ferry between here & Campbeltown & Adrossan is back on the cards. There is a ferry from Ballycastle to Rathlin Island. Carry on round the coast & you reach the "famous" Portrush & the Giant's Causeway (& Irish Distillery). From Portrush head on to Coleraine, Limavady & eventually stop at "Stroke City" ie...known in different circles as Derry or Londonderry..hence "Stroke City".
From here turn back, although to head on is to reach the most beautifull county in Southern Ireland ie Donegall. Daft ain't it ? the most northerly part of Ireland is in Southern Ireland. I dare not say it ? English logic !!
When you head back, remember you turn west at the entrance to the Nine Glens. These are WOW, WOW & WOW. Should keep anyone occupied for a few weeks...It did me & I was born & grew up in the area...Still exploring...Regards & good luck with your venture.

hirohito, I must agree with you. The best wow. We were in Portrush and Portstewart the week end just past.
