Older campers so who best and most reasonable,ok do realise some have probaly had bad experience with one. There are others who have found the same on brillant . I don't want this to turn into a slanging match over he's good he's bad over your experiences.just so i can make a informed decsion based on what is written here. I think i should go for it as not able to crawl arround and under these days.car is serviced regulary.so dont have any worries but better to be covered than not. Thanks in advance .

I'm just going to put forward the alternative option of not having any. Only do this if you can afford a recovery of course!

But like all insurance, it's based on the fact that you will pay more in premiums than you'll get back in call outs. So in the long run, financially you are likely to lose. Of course you may be lucky and turn out a winner, but the odds are stacked against you like at a casino. (If this weren't the case, they wouldn't be in business)

If you come out ahead of the game it means you have to break down first... and who wants to do that!

We've always tried to use Europe Assist and always found them to be more than helpfull as we have had our share of their money back on 2 breakdowns:sad: unfortunatly such is the problems with classic vans :goodluck:

Road side assistance and recovery to a garage within 20 miles for £19 p.a. on top of the insurance premium with NFU mutual. Great value and well worth it as I'm probably well in credit after a little propshaft mishap last month!

I was ahead of the game then, took out recovery with Green Flag 1st May 2009, broke down in the Highlands, 11th May 2009, had to have flat bed, ouch, 12 hour journey back home, ouch. then had some break issue on way to Northumberland in July 09, another flat bed and recovered to nearest garage, ouch, then in dec 09 i put wrong fuel in my car, ouch, recovered to my garage, so i think for the £85 i paid to GF, i am well ahead lol

Yep you certainly got in at the right time!

i think the recovery option would be also be right for people who fret over journeys and if they will break down... peace of mind so to speak. For me, if it happens, it happens I won't lose any sleep over it, but I realise not everyone is like that.

AutoAid, now around £39 p.a. for pretty comprehensive service. Found them on Money Saving Expert: Credit Cards, Shopping, Bank Charges, Cheap Flights and more and been with them a few years now. Like GEM, you have to pay up front and then reclaim, but they are cheaper than GEM, and also let you find your own repairer if you break down locally or whatever. Had to call them out twice on first long trip in the van (both times down in Somerset), and they sent out fairly OK local repair people. Prior to that I have only called twice re breakdowns close to or at home and asked for my own people to deal with them. Service and waiting time compares very favourably to others I have been with (don't get me going about the AA, who left me stranded with a child of about 9 on an industrial estate in a place we didn't know locked out of our car and without any means of phoning up (I didn't have a mobile in those days, and there were no phone boxes anywhere near, plus although eventually we walked out to the main road to look for one we didn't dare venture any further for fear of missing them coming). They were called around 6 and we waited until about 10, very scared, cold and hungry. The next experience was when my car's head gasket went whilst we were away in Wales: didn't want to cut short our break so arranged for them to come and recover us when we were ready to go home and made do with buses into Swansea and walking in the meantime! On the appointed day, great big truck turned up, loaded car onto back and hooked up period Robin caravan with curved glass front window, then as he turned out of the road to the campsite onto the main road, the window was put through by the truck itself as he'd not used an extension thingy and turned through too great an angle. Horrible man! And we never got compensated since they took so long to process the claim that the van got wrecked by endless rain in the meantime....... :-(
AutoAid.... -)

ADAC Plus for us. Only used them once for a flatbed recovery in Morocco when an arcing battery cause the ignition security system to fail.
150km, all arranged by phone via the German office and all done without any hitches.
