Born again bikers!

Well, having just retired, with OH due to finish at the end of June, we have arranged to pick up our next motorhome next week,(excited!!) complete with bike rack. So we have bought a couple of hybrid cycles, for 2 reasons - transport obviously and to stop the weight piling on we hope! I hadn't been on a bike for about 30 years, (the last one being a Raleigh Shopper!), so if you see a sixty something pair of old f@rts wobbling along on a couple of retro looking cycles, please DON'T give us a beep as you pass- I might fall off!

OH has gone over the top as usual (no, not the handlebars) and bought lights - I'm not riding in the dark!:scared: - helmets, (fair enough) panniers to put the shopping in - well he'll have to carry both otherwise we'll be unbalanced, won't we - and, horror of horrors, cycling shorts! I haven't worn anything that close fitting for about 40 years.

Give it a couple of months and it'll all be on fleabay!

Don't forget the gel pants and gel saddle you'll need as much padding as you can get!! I haven't found a comfortable bicycle seat yet .. maybe it's my @rse!! Think I need a tractor seat:lol-053:
Anyway have great times in your new van and happy wobbling on your velocopedes.

Please post the photos...............................:lol-049:

their is a saying about riding bikes cant remember it though lol, you will have great fun enjoy ps gel breeks are a great idea

If you are budget concious like myself, aviod bike shops for things you need Aldi and Lidl have great biking accessories, usually much better value

Well we've got the shorts with a great wodge of something in them, give you a very strange shape (if you don't already have one!), and the retro saddle is almost as well padded as my @rse. Did think about those elbow and knee protectors that the kids use on their skateboards, but OH thinks that's going a bit far. I think any photos might be censored in the interests of good taste, but you never know!

Land of the prince bishopes....Durham way then. ?...brother maingate as a neighbour..

Anyway forget that, bikes, fresh air, wild camping, and re finding your youth.

I love the idea...and I am sure aching muscles aside,...a fantastic way to have fun relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Good luck have fun

Well, we decided to set off early this morning, before the traffic built up as we live right in the centre of Bishop Auckland, so by 8.15, having fallen off once for absolutely no reason whatsoever, we set off along the Bishop Auckland to Brandon Railway path. I was really surprised at how well I did, a total of 10 miles door to door. Couple of stops for a drink (of juice!) on the way, we were home by 9.45, so not bad going for a couple of golden oldies. I am a bit tender in a certain area, but not too bad, and I'm sure the grazed knee will mend.

Now I just need to practice going in a straight line, and taking a hand off to signal without wobbling all over the place, then I might be ready for the road - watch out!

ps We are not quite as far north as Maingate, but we did meet up at Croft couple of months' back.

Well done marydot, you've dine the hard bit plucking up to ride again after a period of abstinence.

I'm sure you will be fine, and a fantastic way of leisurely soaking in the vista on your travels.
Whilst keeping fit too...a winner

Happy travels

Talking about sore @rses.... the bikes would not be BSAs per chance?

What, you mean with a 1200cc engine?:lol-053: No, they are Viking Keswick hybrid bikes, with a retro look to them, just like us!

This morning, everything is a wee bit stiff, don't know if I will be able to make contact with the saddle today.

You did well but you will be more sore tomorrow.

10 miles and only 2 drinks.

My wife and I do 32 mpg - thats a pint of real ale every 4 miles !

And you managed 32 miles - 8 pints of real ale and still pedaling. Respect:beer:

Flippin' heck! I meant orange juice from our water bottles! I can't ride in a straight line yet, and I don't drink alcohol anyway!
