I know that many folk travel through Bilbao to/from the ferry however has anyone actually stayed there?

We have it in mind on next year's Spanish trip that we'll stay there for a few days and have a look around. It seems a sensible place to have a rest after driving down through France.

There are various possibilities, some with services, some chargeable, others free:

Kobetamendi is in a great location at the top of a hill with amazing views across the city, particularly at night when it’s dark. Excellent bus service runs regularly to the city centre. We’ve used it a number of times.

We had set off on the ferry from Bilbao to UK when my wife was taken ill.
The ship's doctor examined her and decided the ship would return to her berth, and an ambulance and emergency team came aboard and took us on Blues & Two to the hospital (Moho went to UK).
I stayed in a hotel for 20 days until she was discharged.
Only places I visited were places to eat.

Probably the best city in Spain for a tapas or pinxtos crawl, with copious and cheap Txakoli. San Sebastien and Logrono may disagree though. I always visit if nearby, which has been pretty much yearly of late. I always stop on the aire in Mungia,(N.43.35655 E.2.843129) which is a nice little town in it's own right. 2euro bus ride to Bilbao.

I think that you mean N43.35655 W2.843129 https://www.campingcar-infos.com/aire-area-de-mungia/view.php?id=35014
N43.35655 E2.843129 puts you in France, in a field of vines in the small commune of Agel, which has no aire.
