Here are a couple of good links for LPG stations
https://autogaslimited.co.uk/43d2-where-to-find-autogas is a good link and goes beyond just shell stations

Given how essential LPG is our lifestyle I don't understand why LPG info is not easier to access on this site - why not on the POI's?
Also when you search for LPG it just says 'The search could not be completed because the search keywords were too short, too long, or too common.'

I have been full timing for a year but usually in well established circuit so I know the LPG sources - now I am looking to go further afield so would like to find a one hit solution to this once and for all. Thank you.

You will be lucky. We found one in Spain the other year but Data came from MyLPG which is the data others use. You could download all the CSV files you can find and combine them all into one big database but then you will find hundreds of duplicates as the same fill up points are shown with slight variations in Lat and Long. One of the biggest problems is no one ever removes anything they just keep adding. Bit like the speed camera database on the motorway. Most of the warnings are 50mph because some idiot has reported the roadworks cameras.

Thanks - and nice to know you feel my pain :)
I suppose we are all spoilt with data coming out of every conceivable device but LPG fill points - not bottles is hard info to get quickly and reliably.
Hey ho

Lookup lpg stations

In Nottingham I use my local Shell Site. There is another one shown where the price is 10p cheaper but all they do is supply cylinders. The also deliver bulk supplies. We have certainly been down this route before when we were up north. First one we drove to sold bottles only, second one we never found, third one didn't sell gas and never had but their other site down the road did so off we went. I think it is the most expensive gas I have ever bought at 90p/l, but when its cold and you have an empty bottle you have to fill up where you can.

Of course once you have filled up you see loads of LPG Garages

KML file for Morrisons LPG just copy and save it as Morrisons_LPG.kml. Works with IGO Software and Google maps

You are going to see fewer and fewer Autogas outlets in the UK. It was once heavily promoted, Government incentives, car manufacturers offering OEM versions etc.

Not so anymore. Shell in particular are taking out their pumps. And talking of installing electric charging points instead, looking to the future.

My local BP station still has them, but speaking to the manager he said that a week could go by between anyone using them. Me occasionally topping off my Gaslow with a few litres was not going to sustain that business.

Previously there was a steady demand from taxis/private hire customers with conversions, but in my area the licensed ones are required to use hybrids now. Mostly all Priuses. A joke, because they hardly ever run on 'leccy, which in any case is generated inefficiently by the petrol engine. They are not happy, their fuel costs have greatly increased, but those are the rules.

He wouldn't be surprised if BP took them out soon as well.

Which is why I am looking at diesel heaters for my van. In Scotland Autogas is very scarce and heating is my biggest demand when it gets chilly.

The best source by far in the UK is FillLPG:

There is an Android app available which I use all the time and allows me to very quickly update the information after I've filled up.

MyLPG has been mentioned and is usable for Europe but not very accurate in my experience.

If in France there is definitive information available from the Government.

Use this website:

The reason that LPG POIs aren't available here is simple. We provide wild camping information because it's what we specialise in providing.

There is no point in duplicating information available elsewhere which is authoritative. Apart from all the work involved of course!

What surprises me is that some Motorhome manufacturers are installing under body tanks when for a few years now the future widespread availability of autogas has been increasingly uncertain. Without doing research I would hazard a guess that they do not fit a properly vented gas locker to allow the option of bottled gas by exchange.
I know I would feel uneasy if I was looking at a new van if an underslung tank was the only option.

Davy

Worse still, some manufacturers remove the spare wheel to replace it with a doughnut tank. So you are utterly dependent on Autogas, and don't have a spare wheel. Double fail.

Out of curiosity - what sort of capacity do you get in an underslung tank? I've got two 12 litre bottles in a vented cupboard that can take about 20 litres max in total. They fill from an external valve in the rear nearside corner.

Not as much as you might think.

Autogas/propane is 0.5 kg/litre.

Underslung tanks are usually quoted in total capacity, of which you may use 80% if the filler valve is working correctly. And you can find a supply of Autogas.

Even the most optimistic install on my Ducato would be 65 litres i.e. 52 litres usable. That's 26 kilos. The same as two Calor 13 kilo bottles which fit in my locker with room to spare for another 6 kilo bottle. Or a refillable setup as I have.

Honestly I can't see the point. If you do have a gas locker you have flexibility to stuff in whatever suits. Exchangeables, refillables, local bottles, a combination.

If your van is designed to be totally reliant on an underslung gas tank and Autogas supply, no other option, then I pity you.

Whilst there is no App for Apple devices the filllpg website is very easy to use on an iPhone and very much better than any other source of UK lpg info I have found.

Well here I am at Shell Ilminster - Autogas signage in place but where the pump once was is now just a metal plate on the ground.

Any one know any LPG pumps on the M5 I'm heading up to Matlock from Devon? Ideally looking for first hand info - I don't find FillLPG much good if you want pump only - I can't use bottles.

Shell Illminster shown as unavailable since September 2019 on filllpg. Not sure where you are now but go to https://www.filllpg.co.uk/?page=lpg.php and you can look up the nearest, it only shows pumps not bottle suppliers.

I filled up at Podimore down the A303 a bit. Thank you. Was gonna ask if any of you LPG people would swap for diesel heating given the choice? Seems like it would be a lot less hassle but I don't like the idea of diesel noise / fumes however slight.

Cribb’s Causeway has an Asda that has cheap LPG. It is not far off the M5 J17.

It's becoming scarcer and scarcer in the UK. Particularly in places like Scotland where it was never plentiful, and where I could use a lot of it, in cold weather.

According to https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/...ld-diesel-crisis-give-it-opportunity-comeback, a 2018 article, "According to Holly Jago of Autogas, a joint-venture LPG supply company owned by Shell and Calor, around 120,000 vehicles are converted to run on LPG in the UK, and about 4000 are converted each year, but that amounts to just 0.2% of road fuel use."

That is not sustainable. Hence why Shell, the major supplier, is taking out their Autogas pumps. It never gained any mainstream traction.Almost nobody went LPG only with their vehicles, but kept the petrol tank too, for good reason.

Diesel heating seems like the only viable option, looking forward. For me. Possibly even preferable.

Those heavily invested into Autogas systems for their campers, or suppliers of the kit, may disagree, but that's the way I see it, an industry in decline. We were only ever living off the road fuel ecosystem, but the demand for that is minimal here and declining.

I am only invested into one Gaslow cylinder, which has paid for itself several times over compared with exchange cylinders, nevermind the convenience, but if the supply dries up as I think it may, perhaps quite quickly, that may change.

Any idea how big diesel systems are or where they can be fitted? Presumably it's a fairly major expense to convert?

There is another thread all about these to which I have contributed. There are two sizes, based on either a small 2 kW Webasto design, or a larger 5kW Eberspacher design.

The heaters themselves cost about £100 with all the fittings, from ebay Amazon or China. The original German ones approaching £1000. By most accounts the Chinese copies are just as good.

Fitting one can be straightforward if you have room inside the van. In my case that is limited, fitting it under the floor will require some extra work. The inlet and exhaust to the combustion chamber must be correctly done for safety and proper performance. They can be noisy and do require a little maintenance. As well as drawing a bit of current whilst running to operate the fans, not much more than say a Truma Combi.

Actually Truma do a diesel powered version of their Combi, that would be my choice if buying a new van, and it was an option.

You can drive yourself mad watching e.g. youtube videos about these things, everyone seems to be having a go now that they are so inexpensive.

Bottom line is that, correctly done, they can work very well. Since I have a massive 125 litre extended range fuel tank already, it is the obvious thing for me to fit. Reserving the gas for the cooker, fridge, and periodic water heating for showers, where a single cylinder can easily last me a month. Whereas using it for heating I can get through an 11kg refillable in less than three days, when it is chilly. By my calculations I could survive on 100 litres of diesel (leaving at least 25 litres for the engine) for over two weeks in well sub-zero conditions with the heater running continuously.

I haven't done it yet, still in the planning stage.

It won't help the UK Autogas situation, I am hardly a large consumer as it is. Basically it's down to demand for road fuel usage, if that's not there, it will disappear. Installations have to be maintained at some cost, if they are not getting the returns to justify that, at the next renewal they will be gone.
