Best route from Biarritz to Lagos, Portugal

Hi all you continental travellers. I would be grateful for your suggestions as to the best route to get us down to the Algarve from Biarritz. I'm confident that I know the best route to there, but Spain & Portugal will be new ground for us.
I don't want to use toll roads any more than is necessary, but as it will be February when we are travelling, I don't want to risk mountain pass roads where we may encounter poor road conditions.
Just the most straightforward route please.
Thanks,

Jackie :)

If you take A.J.S. route make sure you stop off at Salamanca--go in to the very large square stand in the middle -close your eyes--and listen to SPAIN!!;)--Salamanca is the hub of Spanish learning--it's fantastic:D
Bye for now

Have a look at the viamichelin website, a route planner where you can play abot with all the paramaters, get an idea of expected fuel consumption etc journey times, peage etc.

The sanme route as we go but we carry on past Savilla then head for Portugal over the bridge to Castro Marim (new motorhome aire there )roads are good. I would be wary of going off at Cafra I think the roads a bit narrow and winding, the motorway past Savilla is ok.
However when we left in April we came out of Portugal by Badajoz after being at Mertola for a few days.
We are thinking of going in that way in December to Evora then down to the Algarve it was a nice run roads were fine.
Heading off on the 1st Dec ...

i would take the way alanval says and drop down to albufeira good roads .came back that way in march .

Hi Jackie,
travel across northern Spain to just below Lisbon and go the coastal route, lots of gorgeous places to wild. Take your time and enjoy.

Happy Camping:)

If you want stopping places here is a map with them shown Span/Portugal Aires you can also download them as TomTom POI's. The info on the stopping places is linked to a spanish forum but with a bit of translating with BabalFish you can find out more information.

I have done the route many times, it is fairly easy and you don't have to use the French Payage motorways (Ripp Off), just follow the old Route Nationals.

The Motorways in Spain are much cheaper and good to use across central Spain.

If you want info on where to free camp let me know, but I will tell you the answer anyway, any small town or village will have a car park or somewhere you can stay. They don't mind and if you find the local bar and have meal they will always let you stay.
