Hoping for some advice on this on guys...
my two kids are off back packing round europe for a month over the summer hols.
(lucky beggers!)
What's the best phone provider to go with....
Daughter will talk non-stop but son will only use in emergency?

Can't say which is the best, but our solution using our O2 phone is we pay £10 a month extra for My Europe while we are away. This allows us to receive calls for free, when we want to get in touch we can call either of our daughters then hang up after 2 rings. They then call us back using their free O2 minutes.
As I say not necessarily the best option but works for us.

Skype on a smartphone, connected to free WiFi's. Or Fon.com HotSpots.

We have Orange (which doesn't even work in our village) and Vodaphone, and on last weeks trip down to Spain and back the both kept switch reciprocal providers and had a signal every time we checked - Don't know about charges as we've yet to get the bills!

Hi,

Have you looked at these International Sim Cards - that work in multiple countries?

Get the phone "Unlocked" and buy a local sim (yes you can some problems with an address, just be creative)

Also look up a cheap "dial though" provider for the UK so it's cheap for you to call them - International Mobile calls can be very expensive, but using a 3rd party can be a low as 3ppm.

It is a very confusing world out there - they make it that way to stop you from looking for a good deal.
