My subscription to AVG finished yesterday, and bearing in mind monies tight and I wont be using the net as much later in the month. Whats the best free Anti virus software out there?.

I am reluctant to subscribe when my on line use will be at best minimal and often on other machines.

Prior to subscribing I was an Avg free user, and possibly that is the way to go unless if anyone suggests otherwise.

I have Spybot, Lava soft Adaware and Malwarebytes anti Malware loaded up.

regards

AVG Free is good enough for most people who just use the net for email and surfing.

I find common sense is the best Anti Virus tool you have :)

if you want to pay then Kaspersky is very good but can lock down a home pc too much for some. We use it on 5000 pc's at work and it does the job very well.

I use AVG free version on my PC and Microsoft Security Essentials on my netbook. Both are free and seem to work well, although it's still early days for the MS package.

I use AVG free edition, I have in the past used Microsofts own at £39 a year for 3 computers ,I thought it was good but it insisted on a full backup every Month, their customer services were great though. I also used Norton once which I couldn't get rid of even after the contract ended,a real pain. I'll stick with AVG now.

AVG Free or Avast Free IMO.

Marks right though the best defence is common sense. Watch what sites your on Channa!!!:D

If you go with Avast which is a good choice you have to register. Make sure you do as it has a habit of stopping working if you dont!

Having had problems with Kaspersky, I have now reverted back to AVG edition 9.0.
When I ran the AVG for the first time, found about 20 different virus, including Trojan Horses, so you make your choice, spend your money on a few pints or a good bar meal.
Good luck.

.

avast here also... 4.8 pro version... if you pay for it it's even better :p

Hi
Some advise on this, your anti virus software is only as good as the 'virus definitions' installed.

If you have a paid for AV program and you let the licence expire then your definitions won't be up to date. The virus writers do this as there job and they are constantly looking for and trying to exploit security holes so you must always be upto date.

The other one is windows updates, for the same reason you must always do windows updates as many of these updates are to close security holes that have been found.

i have used AVAST for years with no problems at all ;)

I have used AVG and Avast - Avast (free) seems to be more up to-date than AVG and certainly quicker.

avg on lappy and avast on desktop (both freebies no probs) used to have mcaffee £3mth that too was good.

Or you could get an Apple Mac and not worry about viruses.

As a user and supporter of Macs, PC's and Linux based systems I would be careful assuming that Macs are safe. Applemacs are as vunerable as PC's but the number of mac users is very small compared to PC so the virus writers have not bothered writing much software to exploit them but this is changing,

In the last few years there have been a number of viruses / trogens released against macs which Apple has fixed quickly, the SH/Renepo worm which turned off the firewall being one that springs to mind.

As the popularity of macs and Linux based systems increases I would expect this issue to increase.

BTW I do not wnat to enter into a Mac is better thread there are enough of those on the web, I like and use em both :D :D

I've used AVG free for a few years on a number of computers with no problems - tend to set scan to manual and it's quite quick to update; used to have norton system works but slowed computer down a lot and it wasn't worth the cost. I also have spybot and advanced systemcare 3 free. A relative uses avast and is quite happy. I don't see the point in paying when the free stuff seems just as good for my purposes ie internet and email

After problems with AVG 9 I switched to Avast and was surprised at it's new interface and speed!

Hi, If you liked AVG, Try "thepiratebay.org" and download the latest version full version and crack code from there, I have AVG 8 on my laptop and had no problems and license is valid for 5 years

thanks for the replies guys and gals.

BTW the dodgy websites are the hound not me......I mean what the hell is Alsations in Gas masks all about ;)
