Benefits of mild winter

For years, we've had very few "small" birds in the garden, even though we regularly put out food.

We were plagued with herring gulls, but since putting up trellis and other obstructions in the garden the gulls don't frequent our patch much.

We've got a community of Jackdaws here and they can be quite funny, watching them together, but this year I've noticed a sudden explosion of sparrows, blue tits etc.

The sparrows fledged weeks a go and are as big as the parents. I've noticed some of the parents gathering nesting material again today, so maybe we'll get two broods this year.

Anyone else noticed this??

we have noticed we have a lot less swallows this year?? if we have 6/8 pairs thats about it, usually we have lots in and out all the buildings  (sh!tein on everything)

All we've got is scores of greedy fat pigeons. Could do with a natural predator to reduce their numbers and give some other birds a chance.

I am sure the dawn chorus is earlier this year, 4 o'clock this morning. Maybe it's just that I'm awake much more during the night??
