Hi, In today’s independent (newspaper of the more singularly minded motor caravanner) it stated that up 52 pubs a week were closing. Which neatly brings me to the pub stopover list. I am away at the Bristol balloon festival at the beginning of August, but before leaving I will post an updated list (73 & rising). If you know of any changed situations regarding the current list, let me know. Its getting to be a case of use them, or lose them.

Often the same pubs which re open with new tenants fail if this area is anything to go by (West Yorks). One locally has been open and closed three times in 12 months.

Indeed my own establishment was closed for a while in the new year prior to my occupancy.

The reasons for failures are varied it seems and a lot of pubs have perhaps three tenants in a year without closing the doors!.

All this inconsistency is a bad thing for the industry that I do know

Yes, we've had the same thing in our village over the last few years, fortunately the two pubs now both have leaseholders that have lasted more than a year.

Mind you, I don't know how a village with a population of 2000 can support two pubs and a social club. I do my best though :D

I have an ex servicemans club 25 yards away which will close on Sunday after 62 years !

I have already acquired three pool teams, And the assumption is it will be good for my trade.

Actually I disagree, People have had the choice if visiting this end of the village to visit both venues we share a customer base but offer different things...Here for example live music they cant the premises doesnt lend itself.

My reservation is this goin gforward people will have to make a specific effort to visit here, So perhaps not agood thing the club is closing.

I am currently negotiating to buy their snooker table I have the space to accomodate and offer a traditional pub experience hopefully.

Yes afraid you do!!! But not as old as me:eek:
The only way it seems pubs make it these days is with food and entertainment for the kids, anybody been to a taybarns!! pay your money at the door eat as much as you want from the carvery, free soft drinks, We went not long back with the (now grown up) kids and 1 grandkid, and it was fun, but I want an old fashioned pub. Lounge for the posh people, smoke room for "smokers", Tap room for games and ladies of ill repute. It worked well.
What really makes me mad is when I was in Tossa De mar this year the cafes allowed you to smoke and the owners told me that when the EU rule came in the local council said it was up to the cafe owners to choose smoking or non smoking.and passed a bylaw. I was in Cyprus a few weeks ago, and sitting in a very posh restaurant with ash trays on the table, I asked if we could smoke, the maitre d said "at these prices sir if you want to smoke then smoke, If the police arrive because someone has complained, we will bribe then and then charge it to your bill" I never smoke when eating, but it was nice to know I could if I wanted to.
The bottom line is that these stupid laws are passed by the EU, most of the EU enforce them if they want, the GB just goes daft and enforces the letter of the law.
My personal opinion is that they are turning us into a nation of hobbits, we will go to work and then straight home with our cans from the supermarket, never mixing with our local people, the best contact being by the net. O MY GOD WHAT AM I DOING NOW:D

.

Hi Channa

Where is your establisment?
I only ask as you mentioned you have live entertainment and my other half have a band (Wild Honey live band and dj wedding entertainment in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire & the North West.HOME PAGE) - they mainly do weddings now (better money!) but still do the odd pub, if your based local to us maybe you could have a look at them?

Hi, Does anybody know if the Drift inn, Seaton burn is still open, & if the Old bull & butcher near Princethorpe has re opened and useable ? Plus any other changes. We want the new list when published to be as up to date as possible. Thanks
