Did anyone see this today?

Free Camper parking reviewed

Sounds like they are clamping down on a few spots. The article has quoted one old guy who parks there in a very negative way. Not that they would be biased of course...

it really is becoming a problem down here . we like to think its omly been the undesirable element that as messed it up .but now anybody and every body seems to be abusing it. 1maybe 2 nights and move on is ok. its the same in spain and portugal in winter some dont move for months . i meet some who say they stay there for upto 6mnths and never move their van . they have a toad so dont need to move the camper. sometimes i think we may be the last generation of free campers , i hope not but its definately getting like it. cheers alan.

Ted Vallis, 82, from Bristol said he parks for a fortnight every year along the sea wall.

He said: "I've been here for a fortnight, and I've got the sea front, and can see straight down into the water."

Mr Vallis said he would continue to take advantage of the free parking until it became illegal.

Sadly that attitude will mess it all up for the rest

its not always the young that are iresponsible .theres alot of thoughtless old gits out there as well. ha ha . i,ll be one soon ,hee hee. there are loads of sneeky little places every where, i have never used a list of them except for the aires book. i find it better to move inland a bit at night in the summer ,but with folk like him staying for 2 weeks you cant even get a share.

The guy quoted doesn't sound like a very good advert for any of us, but you never know if they just took a very little part of what was said and what context it was spoken in. To me he sounds very selfish and uncaring, but then if he is 80 he probably knows he will pop his clogs one day soon and b*****ks to the world.
Strangely enough I lived not 5 miles away from this spot for over 10 years, I used to go crazy parties on Longrock beach with travellers who would be parked up the road a little nearer to Tescos, and they never used to have any trouble (nor did they cause it). That was over 20 years ago though.

I for one am grateful for this site and it's advice, even if the only spots I have tried to use it turned out weren't there any more or you couldn't actually stay in any more (Braunton, Saunton Sands).
I haven't been moved on from anywhere yet either though, but I must admit I'm not looking forward to plods first knock on the window.

Its people like him who spoil it for every one else we used to go to other places and park by the sea front but the same happened there some people were staying there for 2 weeks at a time and sothe council put up pay and display meters and limited the stops to four hours.
There is always one

Hi, I have written about this problem on this forum before. We happen to live a 100 yards or so from the sea front in the Bournemouth area & the number of folk who turn up in the summer months, park, refuse to move, even when asked by the police, then leave overflowing litter bins & worse is not good news for residents or holidaymakers who have paid good money for a weeks relaxation, not to look at a ford transit van with a line of washing strung up between the rear doors, and some idiot peeing in the privet hedge. That sight greeted me one morning last summer. Put me right orf me porridge.

Can I suggest as well as venting our felings on this web site we write to, or call the councillor mentioned in the BBC page.

Her details are found at Cornwall Council

Personally I feel the answer to this as in so many places on the continent is not a total ban rather a restriction to 24 / 48 / 72 hours>

As I proposed I contacted the councillor involved and a very warm response back with an offer to meet and discuss the issue. Sadly as we are not proposing to be in the area this year hopefully some fellow wild campers may be able to meet her and put our case?

There was supposed to be a maximum 48hr limit on the overnight parking aire at Dawlish Warren. This limit was regularly abused by people who stayed for weeks sometimes.

As a result of this and the fact that travellers have set up site there we have now lost this facility.

There are always people who mess things up for others, it's a case of I'm ok jack and two fingers to the rest of you!!!

its a shame there isnt a bigger area off the road where people can park for a few days.
