Battery connection question.

As mentioned on another thread, the airbag module on the MH went kaput and I have managed to source a replacement module of the same model number. The instructions are to remove the negative cable from the battery, easy enough I thought, except the battery is so crowded with busbars and cables getting to the clamp nut is nigh on impossible without stripping most of it out.
My neighbour who used to be a mechanic 40 years or so ago said that the earth strap from the negative terminal to the body can be removed from where it connects to the body, this effectively is the same as removing the earth clamp on the battery stud. Is he correct?

As r4dent has mentioned vehicles have changed a lot and it will most likely have more than one earth now,
The only safe way is to disconnect the battery, is it any easier to disconnect the positive? If so just disconnect that one

Thanks guys, you have helped me make my mind up, the MH is in for it's MOT test on Tuesday, I'll let them deal with it. If it was straight forward I would do it but it is like an explosion in a spaghetti factory in the battery compartment so I will leave well alone.
