Battery Charger problem.

Hi
Anyone any experiance with battery chargers? mine stopped working this week end. Removed it and the glass fuse on the circuit board has gone, 15amp 230volt it says on it. Don;t know whether or not to try for another one or to send it away for a proffesional repair. Do you think a standard charger would do for a stop gap.

Any cheap charger will get you out of trouble - but best not to leave any cheapie connected permanently, even one of those taper chargers where the current dies off to near zero after a few hours. Make sure it is connected to the battery the right way around.

As for your current charger. Depends a bit whether the charger is on the 240V side or the 12V side.

240 V side - probably indicates serious problem on the circuit board somewhere and you may be able to spot burn or swollen components. Not much to be lost by replacing it and trying it again because fuses do fail from plain old age sometimes

12V side - fuses do often fail just because of repeated cycling, especially if the current put out by the charger is more than half the fuse rating. Can also be caused by connecting it up reverse polarity in which case there is nothing to be lost by replacing it and crossing your fingers.

In both cases, safety glasses and a reasonable distance away would be prudent.

It would help if you say what van you have and the make of the charger.

The van is a swift Royale 590 1997 the charger has no make on it at all just a supplier that is now a private number, it does say inter-power on a sticker but its the same sticker from the supplier so don't know if it's relavent.
I have just changed the fuse and pluged back it and it went bang but the fuse I changed is ok, strange.

I cannot help you out but I believe that there is a Swift owners forum which might be your best bet.

I belive Swift use Seargent Electrics as their supplier for the electrical side of their vans. They do a fixed price repair service and can be found here.
The fuse will be a slow burn one and would be worth replacing to see if it blows again. Sometimes as fuses get old they seem to become brittle and often blow for little or no reason.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, I have lookes at the repair site, the repair is £4 more than a replacement unit so I think I will go with that.
Cheers
