No doubt this has been covered before but I thought I should give it a mention on here.

I just changed my Bank of Scotland account to a platinum account.

For £21 a month we get worldwide travel until age 80.
AA breakdown recovery with home start for our car and Motorhome.
Motorhomes up to 3.5T and up to 6.3m in length are covered.
And insurance for my mobile phone.

We are very fortunate in that we don’t have any health issues otherwise it may cost you more.
Also you can add to your breakdown recovery if you wish.

Do read the small print before transferring to this type of account.

a) Existing medical conditions incur additional premiums. When I was with BoS I asked how much this would be and was told they could not tell me until I opened the account and had agreed to pay the extra whatever the cost!

b) There is a time limit of 31 days on each trip.

I would recommend anyone who takes out any type of policy to carefully check whats covered.

But let me take your points.

First of all one of the things I liked about this policy was everything is clearly detailed within the conditions supplied by the bank.
I have found no small print whatsoever, everything is clear, and important parts are in bold face print.

Every travel insurance policy incurs additional premiums for certain medical conditions, medical conditions which don't affect the policy (No screen) are quite comprehensive and can be found on page 44. This policy was recommended to me by friends, he has a heart condition, and his wife was receiving cancer treatment two years ago, and she is diabetic. Her diabetes is classed as no screen, meaning it incurs no additional charge. They have a daughter in Sydney, and were there for three months earlier this year. With their medical conditions, their ages, and the cost of a time limit upgrade all taken into account they reckon they saved nearly £800.

The max time limit is not 31 days its 279 days. this can be achieved by upgrading to 45,62,93,186, or 279 days for an additional premium.
This can be found on page 43.

Most insueres as standard only cover you for 31 consecative days.
Until recently I was paying the RAC £15 a month for breakdown recovery, they sent me a renewal for £17.40 a month.
The cover now supplied within this policy is more or less the same.

If you take out the policy and find its not what you require, or feel its to expensive, then unlike normal policies you can cancel at anytime and stop payments with no penalties.
Finally I own an iPhone 14 Pro worth around £1100, it is also covered within this policy, for loss or damage.

Yes by all means check what you are covered for, and if this does not meet your needs then don't take it out.
But for us personally it represents excellent value at only £21 pm.

Pretty much mirrors my Nat West Premiere account Bill.

Thanks for re enforcing my point.

I fully accept that the "small print" you quote provides detail of what is and isn't covered and what is extra.

My point was people need to read and understand these conditions (not just the "headlines") before converting.

Fair enough but your post contains points that would apply to any policy not just
“this type of account”

Also you stated the max continuous stay was 31 days when that is not the case.
The vast majority of insurers as standard only cover you for 31 days, with upgrades being available. For the vast majority of the public 31 days is ample.
I thought this was important to highlight on a forum were people travel for longer than 31 days. It’s also worth checking home insurance for longer travel times.

For me the main stumbling block would be the size and weight of your Motorhome at 2.55 wide and 3.5T this could be a deal breaker for some, hence why I highlighted this on my op. I am fortunate that our new van meets this criteria. But notwithstanding this many may still take out this account for the other benefits.

On my OP I wrongly stated a length limit of 6.3m my apologies there is no length limit, as there was on my RAC policy.
The only limits are 3.5t gross weight, and a width of 2.55m excluding mirrors.

This more or less means any 3.5T Motorhome is covered.

Now that is good news, must try and look into it once we return to blighty.

FWIW, I went for the Nationwide Flex Account Plus Bank Account to get similar extra account 'bonuses' - primarily Breakdown and Recovery for my >3.5t Motorhome via the AA.
I think that account is pretty decent value for £13 (IIRC) a month, as apart from the oversized Motorhome cover, you get the Travel Insurance and gadget insurance as well.

Interestingly there is an slightly odd limitation size-wise with the Nationwide account for the Breakdown .... There is no upper weight limit; I don't think there is a maximum width limit quoted or a maximum length; but I think if in Europe (doesn't apply in UK?), there is an upper HEIGHT limit which could impact Motorhomes with overcab bed bulges such as my Autotrail (I think I am something like 3cm too high if it were to get measured for adherance?)

I can't really attest to how well the 'plus' features work of this account as never used any, but cheaper than any other breakdown service for weightier Motorhomes. Can't really say how good the actual Bank Account is either as the only transaction is the £13 a month service fee (plus the annual C&CC membership which for some reason I used the Nationwide account for).

BOS do a similar account for £10 a month, but the travel insurance only covers the U.K. and Europe is only up to 65 and the AA cover does not include home start David.

Do you know if the Nationwide acc has the same exclusions as the BOS please.

I personally would have no idea as it is fortunately not something I have needed to check.

There are always the little differences between different providers that can be critical to the choice.
With Flexplus, you do get Home Starter and European Cover. Same as the Pre-conditions, the age limits was not something I needed to look at, so don't know if there is a 65 age cut off, but it could well be very important to others.
My overriding and singular reason for getting the Nationwide Account was the Motorhome Breakdown cover. It was cheaper than any stand-alone policy for >3.5t Motorhomes even with just UK cover, so having a policy giving Roadside Assistance, At Home, National Recovery and Onward Travel covers, plus Euro Cover travel is great value for my circumstances.
The extra insurances for Travel and Mobile Phone insurance are just handy bonuses for me.

Oh, just to correct something in my earlier post, I just looked at the Breakdown details, and there are now some specifics in some areas and removal of some limits in others (there was a error in the initial policy document I remember so when they fixed that, maybe they simplified other points?)
These are the stated limits for vehicle types:
• Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
• Maximum Vehicle Weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
• Maximum Vehicle Width: 8ft 3in (2.55m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points.

So no height limit anymore it seems, and 7.5t upper limit (might have always been the case for that, actually?).

We have the Nationwide account and have to pay extra for medical cover for one of the conditions that seems to be covered as standard by the BOS account. I’m fairly sure we were able to get this additional cost before taking out the account. I will have to do a full comparison for our circumstances the next time we renew, so the post has been very useful.

I do get annoyed regarding “pre=existing conditions” as I have had a quadruple bypass and an open aortic aneurism repair, so, I have re-conditioned arteries and a reconditioned aorta. I’ve never had a heart attack or stroke as both conditions were picked up through health checks but even though I walk dogs between 2 and 6 miles a day, lift weights, use a rower and spinning bike and mountain bike I’m penalised for ‘pre existing conditions, none of which I now have, we’re going to Spain next week for 2 Months and the cheapest health insurance quote was £850 which I gratefully declined, I’ve taken out breakdown cover with RAC for £200 and I’ll take my chances with my EHIC card. If I should pop my clogs while away they can bury me anywhere they want I won’t require repatriation.

The cooperative bank account we have has similar cover to the BOS, as far as I recall..the age limit is 79 and " pre existing conditions " have be declared. 31 day limit too, I think but £15 month less cashback is worth comparing.

:

So this is the AA via NW? Interesting that the AA direct won't do anything over 3.5t

Before I took out the Nationwide account to get heavier motorhome cover, I was with ADAC in Germany, but they stopped non-German residents taking out cover. But they use the AA in the UK as a partner to provide the service. And both main camping clubs use either the AA or RAC for their breakdown options.
There is clearly some marketing reason why neither the AA or the RAC will do direct cover for over 3.5t Motorhomes.
