Poor Dave...went shopping in the van while I was working away. Couldn't find a space so went to the first floor. Halfway up realised the longer van was a problem...grazed the hub cap. However, once up there, had to come down the same way and found a small extra wall on the inside of a tight bend..no way of avoiding it so now has nasty scuff on the side!:mad1::mad1::mad1::mad1:

First place we took it for a quote wants £1400!!!! No dent but deepish scratches.

Oh No !...

Yeah it’s not a good day when something like that happens is it,,,
Asking the obvious but is it to deep to sort yourself or Polish out?

We know how you feel. bought a new car last year, then 3 months later, we were out for a meal with friends and when parking the car in the hotel car park, we heard a scraping sound as we reversed into a parking space. Checking around we found a scratch/gouge on the rear offside wing. Caused by a supporting thick wire support line from a telegraph pole which was in the car park. The rain was chucking it down and rather than park in an area which had really large puddles, we went to another part of the car park, which was poorly illuminated. When I reversed into the space the support 'hawser' scraped against the car. With all the sensors on the car there was no way they would have detected it though. Gutted! 3 months old. Other times I have seen this situation, the support line has been covered with reflecting tape. Almost £500 to get it fixed. Spoke to the hotel manager, but he just said that parking is at the responsibility of the driver. :mad1:

Well said, Trev !

As the owner of a 27 year old VW Passat, a 24 year old Toyota Surf and a 15 year old Toyota Granvia, all of which (like their 76 year old owner....) are still sound in wind and limb despite mega mileage, I agree with your viewpoint entirely.

There's a lot to be said for golden oldies.... !

Buy old cars/vans like me,one less thing to fret about.

Yeah I know what you mean & there’s a lot of sense in it, But if you WAS to have a New ish well kept n Sparkley Vehicle it would be a gutter if / When scratched,,,
My Livaboard home is 22years old & ive put more Dents n scratches on it in the last 4 years or so than it’s ever had, But it’s the cost of getting to all those lovely secluded park ups that I wouldn’t have chanced with a Newer Vehicle !.

But this year I’m offering The Nest a Bit of a Brush up with some long awaited & Much deserved TLC

Try using a firm like 'Chips away' who will do the repair at your door.

There are a few independants doing the same kind of minor repairs. I got an excellent job done by a local one recently. He sorted the car out and also repaired a couple of stone chip marks on the motorhome bonnet. All for £100.

It was chips away in Kent who quoted £1400!:rolleyes:
We are going to ask a local independent chap who is over the road Suffolk. Dave had the feeling the chips away bloke quoted a price he thought we would pay rather than the cost!

I am glad people buy new, or there would be no second hand stuff for me. In fact they should buy more .

We gave our old self converted van to our son and started him on the stealth camping route! Could have sold it but got far more pleasure from his enjoyment.

No pictures but will take some tomorrow! Went to body repair shop over road from where we are in Suffolk and he is doing it for £300!! Just him and his brother, seemed a bit worried that this might be too much...but showed us a job he was doing at the time ( very careful and thorough). Also found an extra scratch we had not spotted and included that in too! Did not mention previous quote to him.

We have also written to Morrison's and suggested they post a sign warning long vehicles that they should not go up to first floor carpark!

Yep

Inevitable
But really annoying..

I have had a few minor skirmishes will low walls, boulders, adverse cambers, petrol pump hoses.
This over an 8 year period.
Perhaps the most annoying was wheelspats (mudguards) falling off.
One fell off. I removed the other and got a a pair made using the old one as a template.
Much better quality and firmer fix..

Thus when I was thinking of upgrading to a nearly new vehicle (£20K extra)...

No No No !!!
Our vehicle is fine and very clean etc good size and layout (for us)
Has the Toys I like (Reversing Cam / Gasit / Solar / Awning / Tunit Fuel enhancer)

So Keep the £20K available for minor repairs etc
PS also had a new cambelt in January (2018) and Gas regulator (2017)
New Tyres in 2015 so as we travel about 7K a year need to check...may well last this summer

Just because a vehicle is old doesn't necessarily mean that scraping it would be of no concern. I'd be gutted to scratch my cars that have a combined age of 51 years and have covered 150000 miles each, here's one reflected in the other image.jpg

Incidentally I think that a good local body shop will always be better than the national chains.

Reading this reminds me when er indoors got her new car, a Toyota Auris hybrid.
It is an automatic, and the small gear knob has to be pushed forward for reverse and backward for forwards driving (what a stupid idea).

She manages to reverse the one week old car into the motorhome :scared: .... luckily, just a scratch on the corner bumper of the motorhome, but a dent in the plastic rear wing of the Toyota. I am leaving the scratched bumper until it needs more work on it (maybe the next time she hits it). :(

Sorry to hear :(

It is expensive to fix cosmetic damage as I've learnt myself.

Just keep shopping around, they are usually busy at the ime of the year though so it might be worth waiting a bit.

What a brilliant result, huge difference in cost and it’s great to hear when someone gets a good deal. Well done 👍

Bad Day

Don't know where you are, but here in Bamford in the Peak District we have a bodywork guy who does a very good job (trained by his Dad who was trained on Rolls Royce cars) and is remarkably inexpensive. Last job for me Swift dealer quoted £385, he asked £110.

I will have to remember that one I am only a few miles away from there, do you mind saying who it is?
