Hi there are designated motorhome spaces popping up in Ayrshire. Girvan and Ayr seafront are examples. They are a fiver April to September and free outwith that. The Ayr ones on the seafront are 24 hours max stay £5 via on-line or telephone payment - notices give details. Pitches at both places are quite generous. Girvan has the added benefit of waste disposal in season and coded access to marina shower block. Out of season they are just big parking spaces designated for motorhomes and appear free.

Ayr had black waste disposal last summer, but not grey. Recycling/rubbish disposal also available. Both of the above are in the Location App.

Yes Girvan was a portable black waste tank.... these tanks must just be in place for April to September. A positive move by Ayshire Council. Regrettably, however, they have too many car parks with height restrictors along their coastline.

There are lots of small Aires opening in the UK, thanks in a huge part to the work being done by CAMpRA. So when you see things ‘popping up’ often a huge amount of work has been done voluntarily behind the scenes by some very enthusiastic and hardworking motorhomers as they are involved with advice, inspecting sites, lobbying councils and national organisations and helping small private and community sites.

For example, D&G were very proactive last year and some 3 van sites opened under a temporary exemption licence with them. CAMpRA has helped some of those to now extend and stay open, some increasing to 5 vans. They’ve also worked hard with councils and had success with Northumberland, who really were against allowing overnight sleeping in their car parks, and now have 3 trial cars parks allowing this.

Our little Aire at our cottage by the sea in Fraserburgh is another example. Without help from CAMpRA and the lovely Meg @Biggarmac we wouldn’t exist, as they helped us with advice on what to do to be able to open our otherwise redundant hardstanding with sea views as a stopover. We’re charging on a pay for what you use basis, £5 a night per van to park and £5 per use of our new black waste disposal, meaning drop in and drop offs are welcome and if you want to stay but don’t need waste disposal you won’t be paying for it 😊

We were at both of them earlier this month. If you look on the council website it says the charge will be £10 a night from 1st April. There will also be overnight parking at Prestwick, Troon and Ballantrae
At £5 it was a no-brainer. At £10 it's overpriced; there's a small campsite just outside Ayr for £8/night.

Prestwick one might be a bit tricky accessing, most direct route has a low bridge so motorhomes probable need to make a detour, nearer Ayr to access. Five minutes to train station, possibly trip to Glasgow 50 mins and ten minutes to pubs, shops and restaurants.
Troon directly opposite swimming pool, Morrisons and five minutes to town with loads of nice shops restaurants and pubs. Ten minutes for Glasgow or Ayr, Kilmarnock bound trains.
Both right next to the sea with views of Arran, potentially lovely sunsets and excellent dog walks. No grey water but must be worth £10 to support the Councils initiative and local businesses.
It has been suggested by a South Ayrshire Councillor, that scheme should be expanded to some really lovely rural villages and towns like Maybole and not just offered to towns on the coast.

Fact is many still dont do plastic or mobiles, cash was and is still king.
I do like to keep a bit of cash on me, never know when it might be useful but show me a person who doesn't do plastic or mobile payments and your showing me someone who gets stitched into their vest every spring and lights their way to bed with a candle. They will probably not be comfortable with a modern camper or motorhome and feel guilty not to have assistant walking in front wit ha red flag.:)

If they are putting up barriers dose that mean that area will only be available for paying customers We go to Ayr quite a lot but never parked there as the noise was terrible with the racers flying about all night, we used to park up in Charlotte Street but they slapped no overnight signs up.

They will probably be using a similar APNR system to the one being used at Findhorn in Moray. The "motor enthusasts" caused so many negative comments during last years trial that something had to be done.

Go with the times Trev, I've almost been cash free since the start of the pandemic, until a guy from your side of the pond came over and purchased my CNC plasma table and gave me a wad o Northern Irish monopoly money which went into the bank anyway.
