Autotrail Scout (1997) leaky shower

Hi all

Our shower is leaking since it froze recently. I don't think the body of the mixer tap is damaged, but the 'o' rings where the pipes enter the back of the tap. The shower mixer is a V150. I can get a whole new body for about £150 but I would like to repair it first. I don't know where to get these 'o' rings. Ive tried caravan components and Autotrail without success. I have tried re lubricating the joints with silicon grease but it still leaks.

Can anybody suggest a supplier or recommend a tried and tested product that I could try. Would it help to use a house plumbing product like boss white. The mixer tap has two pipe sockets that the two pipes in the shower wall push into. They are held in place by two grub screws.

Many thanks

I have no idea which washer you need but if you have the old one and can see what its made from take it to a plummers wholesaler, the people on the sales desk normally really know their stuff or many large towns still have hardware stalls on their markets. You will be amazed what those guys have in their bottom draws and some of its useful:) Failing that companies like screwfix sell sets of washers which allways come in handy. You will never use half of them but having the right one at the right time can save you a fortune in plummer call outs.

Hi Archie, Just a thought. B&Q sell "O" rings, all in different sizes in a packet, costs a couple of quid. Perhaps one of them will fit. Another suggestion, I had a leak many years ago while on the road. I used silicone and screwed it back on lightly leaving a slight gap. Left it for 24 hours, then I tightened it gently, that solved the problem. The silicone (being rubbery) substituted as a seal. Hope this helps.

The other thing you can try as a temp bodge job is PTFE tape. You can get it from any DIY store

Try giving Dave Newell a ring on 01952 587702.

I am certain that when someone else on another forum had the same problem, he said he had complete inserts in stock. Quite often, it is the plastic insert that cracks with the frost. He stocks them and probably just the O rings as well.

Don't use boss white on plastic or rubber fittings, as it is not suitable for plastic or rubber.

If you have an Aldi supermarket nearby they sell boxes of 'O' ring assortments containing various sizes for £6.99 per box so it's possible there could be a size to fit your taps.

Are you sure its not the ceramic insert that have not cracked  i found water leaking down the back of the pipes on my autostratus and thought it was the o rings but it was the ceramic cartridge insert had cracked in the frost from the previous owner ( leaving the tap closed and not open to winterise ) and i am a plumber ;)
