We have been going to austria for the last 7 years. We always go in august because of school hols and we have never had a problem staying anywere. A good place we have found is the ski lift caparks. We all ways buy a summer card beause this give you access to all the activities at the top of the mountains there. Last year in august it was about 40 degrees and it got really busy around the lakes (same as anywhere) so make sure you get to hem areas early if the weather is hot.
Heres a couple of sites and wildcmping spots i have used in the past.
I rode a motorcycle to austria via the italian alps, and stayed in the Grossglockner mtn region for a few days, and a day excursion over the Virsich Pass down to Lake Bled in Slovenia in 2011.
Nice part of the world and I'd gladly go again to explore more widely. The alpine roads you can take through italy all the way east across austria are all fantastic and well worth the extra time to travel kn instead of the main routes imo.
Just remembered.....
In Austria a lot of the places that attract visitors including the Grossglockner mountain road up to the Glacier, are charged. So if you plan to visit several its better to buy what I think was referred to as a passport... basically a bit like a pay once bus or underground season ticket idea...itll save you lots.
Where we stayed with the motorbikes, the Gasthof deal included this passport, but it should be no bother to track down getting one.
Not far from Grossglockner Eastwards is a toll road which a passport gets you on at no charge, which was purely built as a leisure route through beautiful scenery. We etayed in a small village called Malta (which is up a dead end valley with a dam at the top and a visitor centre well worth a visit itself), and this leisure road is a short run North and turn East from the road north that passes the entrance of the Malta valley. Cant recall its name now but its on sticker on my motorcycle so will try to remember to look at it and post.
