Australia: wild camping, and campsites

We're hiring a motorhome to drive the coastal route from Melbourne to Sydney at the end of Oct.

Can anyone advise us about wild camping in Victoria and in New South Wales? Also, what's the best way to find campsites on our route? The first night we'll need one very near Melbourne (Eastern side). Any ideas?
