Hello
We are currently in Dresden- fantastic city, highly recommended. Park within 1km of city-2€ for 24 hrs!
We had planned the Moselle this year but the weather is so awful, we have moved east.
As we are so close, we would quite like to visit Auschwitz and are just wondering whether any member has been and if they can give any recommendations?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Not personally visited but know several that have. Apparently very emotional and hard hitting but all have recommended. If you have the opportunity i would say don't hesitate.

Probably a good time to visit, usually very crowded.
All I would say is check their website and book a tour. Plenty of parking places, but if you do want a site there is a perfectly good site very close by, here,
It's possible to see in one day, but two would be better especially if doing the museum site and Birkenau.
Definitely well worth a visit, both sites.

As you are in Dresden, have you visited Saxon Switzerland national park? Only about an hour south east of Dresden. Stunning area, well worth visiting.

Thank you for those comments. Much appreciated.
We haven’t been to the national park but had a boat trip in that direction down to Pilnitz.
May investigate further.

HI,
I posted this in 2012.
Hi, We were staying in Zakopane excactly 20 years ago, just after the iron curtain went up & went walking in the Tatra mountains, no doubt its changed greatly since.
If you have not visited this area before I can recommend the 13th c Wieliczka salt mine with its full size cathedral several hundred feet underground. 49.982875,20.056238
Also if you are of a certain age group then one of the 20th centuries most important museums / shrines is Auschwitz. 50.028351,19.204119
These are about 45 miles apart just south of Krakow.
Have a great trip

I also posted this in 2016 in reply to another query.
If any body has a chance to visit Poland I suggest a visit to Auschwitz, for my generation it is possibly the most important museum we can visit.

My generation is those born during our last disagreement with our continental neighbours.

We visited in 2013 Parked overnight at 50.03492 19.18363.

A solemn place and we were upset by a group of Italian motorhomers who also parked and partied.

I visited afew years back. It should be compulsory for all world leaders to see the depths to which humanity can sink. Lots of chatter on the bus going, silent on the way back. Prepare you head to be totally mashed at what you will see because nothing has changed since it was left in 1945, its the same s when the last person walked out. The place i can say that is top of my list of places i have visited as it really does change your perspective on life, death and humanity. A very humbling experience and a warning for the future. Tears in the eyes of even the most toughened soul.

Yes, I visited in June 2015, but I was not impressed. The town to head for is actually Oswiecim. There are three main camps in the complex. Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II called Birkenau, and Auschwitz III called Monowitz. I suspect that you are thinking of visiting Auschwitz I.

At Auschwitz I there was no signage telling me what the rules for entry were, so I joined the back of a huge slow moving queue. I finally reached the door, to find that a tiny paper sign told me that my rucksack containing only my pc wasn't permitted. Instead, I had to leave it at a staffed nearby hut, and then go back and queue all over again. I finally reached the ticket office only to find that single visitors were not permitted before the evening, allowing the day time for guided groups only. I watched as everyone else suffered the same fate, except the guided groups. I told the ticket office staff (behind a glass window) that they were unprofessional in both signage and attitude.

Knowing that Auschwitz II was only about a mile away, I drove there instead. Entry was free because much of the fabric was destroyed by the Nazis trying to hide any evidence of what they had done. I found it very emotional, and I won't go back.

This is the main gateway from the public road outside the camp:

Hi Alshymer

We were there three weeks ago. Do not miss it. You have to book online. Book as soon as you can as you will be given a set time slot. Go for as early as you can so you can fit in both camps with lots of reflection time. We arrived late in the day and actual parked on the roadside just along from the staff entrance. That quiet we stopped two nights.

Whilst your in the region go to the salt mines, amazing! Kraków is also a must visit and if your into walking Zakopane and the Tatra mountains. Mind you the Slovakian Tatra are less crowded.
Enjoy

Saxon Switzerland, well worth a visit. Depending on where you are heading next you could also visit Colditz Castle.

We went and parked in the car park at Birkenau. The most important fact to know is there is no entrance fee! The queue and charge is for the guided tour which I observed to be brief. To do justice to this tragic place go to the shop and buy the official guide book at Auswich and manage your own tour at your own pace.

I've never been but I did go to Bergen Belsen. Go and visit, I strongly recommend everyone does. Just don't expect to enjoy it, it'll change your life.

It's also not too far to visit Krakow in Poland from there. It's a great city to visit. We enjoyed the Sachs Switzerland area as well. Have a great time.

We were there a number of years ago - slept in the car park overnight - hook up available at the lamp posts, not sure what the cost will be now.
