Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) June 2012

CORONAL HOLE: Spewing solar wind, a yawning dark fissure in the sun's atmosphere is turning toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the "coronal hole" during the early hours of June 1st.
Coronal holes are places where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows the solar wind to escape. A stream of solar wind flowing from this coronal hole will reach Earth on June 5th - 7th, possibly stirring geomagnetic storms. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

Although viewing time with the long daylight hours may be difficult there is still a possibility of seeing the Aurora.

Just about to head for the lakes for a week will keep everything crossed it gets that far :bow::bow:

Hmm, quite likely to feck up TV, radio, mobile phone & GPS signals too. I have seen the Aurora from outside my house near Shrops. Staffs border. It helps that we have no street lights so no light pollution.

Hi Viktor, do you mean like this,

Northern Lights Over Teepees

These are spectacular and the teepees are so
pretty in the dark.

BELOW IS A FIRE RAINBOW - THE RAREST OF ALL NATURALLY OCCURRING
ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA. THE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED
ON THE IDAHO, WASHINGTON BORDER. THE EVENT LASTED ABOUT 1
HOUR. CLOUDS HAVE TO BE CIRRUS, AT LEAST 20K FEET IN THE AIR, WITH
JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF ICE CRYSTALS AND THE SUN HAS TO HIT
THE CLOUDS AT PRECISELY 58 DEGREES.

From Spaceweather.com

New sunspot 1496 unleashed an impulsive M3-class solar flare on June 3rd at 1755 UT.

This flare has not yet been analysed so it is uncertain whether it will hit Earth but is is pointing in the general direction, however there is also a large solar wind heading our way and it is quite likely the two will combine as the flare is a lot faster. We did have a yellow event yesterday afternoon in daylight with a red event around 4pm. About a month back a flare and solar wind combined for a great display but I missed it by failing to keep and eye on Aurowatch. The solar wind is due 5th - 7th June.

Uk on Yellow Alert Status...was Amber for a short period an hour or so ago.....keep your eye on it....might be a display later tonight after dark....see AuroraWatch.

Unfortunately the weather may not play ball but:

ANOTHER CME: On June 14th, for the second day in a row, sunspot AR1504 erupted and hurled a CME toward Earth. The fast-moving (1360 km/s) cloud is expected to hit our planet's magnetic field on June 16th at 14:00 UT, possibly sparking a geomagnetic storm. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

DOUBLE CME: Active sunspot AR1504 is facing Earth and hurling coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in our direction. A fast-moving CME that left the sun on June 14th is expected to scoop up another CME already en route and deliver a double-blow to Earth's magnetic field on June 16th. Weak-to-moderate geomagnetic storms are possible when the clouds arrive. Check SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids for images and updates.

AuroraWatch UK amber alert, 2012-06-16 21:20:01UT.

Possible Aurora tonight

Timing of the incoming hit spot on the darkening hours....Aurorawatch Red but weather in NI poor so didn't wait to see if it broke...anyone see anything?
