Arrrgh parking woes

neigbours just threatened my misses because the van is parked up the street outside their house. Its the only place we can realistically park it because there is *never* spaces outside our house and its only a single lane road. The van is parked perfectly legally and is fully legal in all aspects. This really winds me up as she is upset and there is nothing I can do about it as i am 100+ miles away.

Why do people think they own the space in the street? There is never any cars parked in that section of road. We move the van around when ever we can so its not always in the same place. But regardless I pay every damn tax and insurance required and am breaking no motoring laws.

And to the extent of threatening my misses with the police???????

As you say you are parked perfectly legally so there is no excuse for your neighbours threatening your missus. I could recommend that you carry a digital recorder and see if you can get their threats on tape . You could then have some evidence if the situation gets worse. (I use a 'Thumbs' recorder which is as small as a USB memory stick .)

Problem is they may escalate the problem by vandalising your van or car and the problem may get even worse if they get other neighbours to gang up against you.

Its a very immotive issue and best to avoid conflict with neighbours if possible. moving the van around daily will help but you need to find a long term solution. The problem is its so big and in-their-face. if you parked a car outside their house they probably wouldn't regard it as such an issue.

have you tried to rent a garage or part of a neighbours drivway locally ? many senior citizens have no vehicle and may be glad of the extra income plus having a vehicle on their drive gives them some extra security.

Tell them to contact the police, or even better ask if your wife could contact them on their behalf.

Only if you are causing an obstruction can the police do anything.

Even the white lines that are painted across peoples driveways have no legal standing, they're just there to advise you that it's a driveway, it's only if you obstruct access to the drive could the police do something.

Similar happened here, our neighbour had a split screen VW that he parked close to the corner of the road. Quiet word from local plod and all was well, that is until someone approached a local councillor because their vision was obstructed at junction.

Even though the police resolved the issue, the council now want to put yellow lines on the corner.

The VW was approx 500mm too close to the corner, even when parked legally, the old dear who complained still isn't happy!! even more so when I park my Hitop movano there.

Still, as the local copper said, if your legally parked, there's nothing they can do.

You don't own the road outside your house and neither are you entitled to a view.

It's just so frustrating. I worry about the vandalism part because the area we live in is not the nicest. I have been trying to find storage for it but its either really expensive or miles out of the way!

bob off topic i know but if you go in your profile you can enter your location :idea-007: you never know someone may be able to help:dance:

Aha good idea! Though I thought I had already. Will do this now

To an extent I agree with you. Thats why we move it around as much as possible. With regards to paying to park it, I am trying! It's not
That easy to find somewhere that allows 24/7 access at a reasonable cost.

Our cars are parked on our drive. Our neigbours park their cars in front of our house which we have no issue with. We park the van out of the way up the street where there are never parking problems. There's never any cars there. This is the only vehicle we have parked on the road and I think I am well with my rights legally and morally to park it!

My main issue is the way my misses felt threatens and te aggressiveness used. There simply is no need for it. A friendly chat would have gained better results.

Perhaps if you didn't always park outside the same house. We came home one day to find a large panel van parked outside our house. It was there for three days. We were on the point of contacting the police in case it had been stolen, when I saw a young lad come to the van. All became clear. He lived further up the road, the van had broken down and he was awaiting a part to fix it. He was the member of a rock band and the van was full of expensive kit.

Upshot of it was I towed it back to outside his own house, lent him the tools to repair the van and gave him a word of advice. Knock on the door, or put a note through the letterbox, it stops a deal of worry and smooths any wrinkles with the neighbours. It always helps if you try to get on with them. Who knows? You may need their help one day.

Get the Police involved. That way they will most likely not touch your MH as the finger will be pointed at them.
I had a similar problem with someone parking his van outside our shop. He was a competitor of ours. I made threats at him etc and told him what I was going to do to him and his van. His called the police and I got a bollocking and told that if anything happens to the van they'll come looking for me. I stayed away from his van.
Anyway, good end to the story as someone nicked the van and now he's on the verge of going bust.

Hi Bob
If your neighbours are parked outside your house, can't you wait until they move and then park your van there. Then when it comes to using your van, leave one of your own cars in the space, then swap back when you return.

You say that your cars are parked on your drive, couldn't you park your motorhome on the drive & park the cars on the road as these are a lot more inconspicuous? I would want to keep my motorhome away from any problems. While I sympathise with your position & the other people are out of order threatening your wife but wouldn't it have been better to talk to them before parking your motorhome outside their house as it is likely to be there for extended periods?

Storage Cost's/Repair Cost's

Hi Bob,Just an idea about your parking problem.There is a few secure places around Bristol,look on internet,about £340 a year, acess 7 days,weekend's by appointment,it would cost more than storage cost's to get a scratch repaired,I pay £300 in Lanc's but no agro...alias{the butcher}

In sleepy Suffolk. I pay £160 a year. 24/7/52. secure, but out side on gravel. could have undercover for extra 40 quid. I recon thats a bargain, it also lowered my insurance premium. But I now keep my Trailer there as my present van goes under my car port.

Just a thought!

Controversial though this may be . . . .

I wish the government would introduce a law stating that unless you have a designated parking space for a vehicle you cannot buy said vehicle!

Extreme? Well, maybe. On the other hand, what with environmental issues etc etc does this nation really need so many cars, vans, motorcycles etc?

In response to the original thread: Why not simply put the camper on your drive and park one of your cars in the space where you currently put the van? I know if it was outside my house I'd be pretty annoyed after a while. A car doesn't seem quite such an eyesore.

It won't fit on my drive! or rather it sort of fits but I can't get out of any of the doors then! :rolleyes2:

Thanks for the links guys, i had rang a few of them previously and none were suitable. But theres one there I had not found  Vans at a friends for this week but will hopfully find somewhere decent to keep it soon.

Again, the main reason for this thread was more about the agressive manner of the people, can't people just be nice?

hi ldv camper . what hapens when you are somewhere else ?
there is a school of thought that goes something like this ,,,, when you die the one with the most toys wins. ...
if you havent got 3 campers a couple of caravans ,a shed full of m,bikes . a few stationary engines an odd traction engine ,doesnt life get boring after a while. my mate as possibly the biggest collection of steam engines in the uk . something like 52 last time i saw him . he did have 74 but is cutting down must be a sign of the crunch , ha ha .
course you have to have several in bits as well never know when you might need one.
oh i forgot a good tent collection could be usefull one day as well.
sleeping bags as well ,do they bred when you arent looking. not forgetting meths stoves exahmin block cookers gas cookers . etc . all seem to have a bigger family as time goes by.
cheers alan.

So on behalf of the environment when do you give up the Camper and get on a bike? Does the nation need so many vehicles? Who decides on what is necessary vehicle ownership' and what is less so. The Government has a restricter on vehicle numbers and usage fuel tax and "fuel price escalator", some might say an unfair method as it's not predicated on actual necessity.
Sometimes a large vehicle parked on a private drive is more obtrusive to a neighbours view than if it were parked on the road but tough if that's the dedicated space.,

As long as it has a valid tax disc and insurance, Plod can do nothing about it, it is civil and believe me, plod are not interested in civil cases
