Are we....?

I would say that if you can cook, eat, drink & sleep in your van then it's a motorhome (or camper) If it's just a tent on top of a land rover then it's just that
Are you classed as a motorhome on you V5? To have it classified as a motorhome you have to provide pictures to the DVLA showing certain items such as a bed 6 foot, washing facilities, cooking, storage etc.

Thanks Ed. Sorry, it was a bit of a rhetorical question really. More like: will anyone take exception if we pitch up at an aire in France etc (or even at one of this forum's meets!)? Not wanting to change our registration class.

hi rafiki ,i have used a roof tent on a vw van and now i use it on a mazda bongo tintop .i also have and still do pull a tear drop caravan behind as well .have never been turned off an aire or ever had anything said to me about it. i also park my mini artic outfit on aires .nobody cares what you have (in france).i also knock around with landrover friends lots have roof tents .mine is the actual tent shown on brownchurches white landrover ,they took it off that and made a fitting for the vw. that was about 98 .that long ago. i have put up small tents when travelling on m,bikes in france .the campers say park in here then offer to keep an eye on it if you go to a bar.
life is different over there rules are for breaking over there.
cheers alan.

I don't have a problem with it :D I don't think you would have any problems at all in the French aires or German Stelplatz. Often see people sleeping in cars parked on them (some look like they are living in them) The only things I have seen the gendarmes move on is caravans  It was quite funny as one time it was a French caravan & he was just putting his jacks down when they came & there was a big argument as he pointed at the motorhomes (none of which was French). It wasn't even a proper aire, but it ended up he got moved & the police just waved as they drove off. Don't want to upset people but to me you are more of a motorhome than the 5th wheelers which to me are glorified caravans.

Hey Rafiki, you,d be made more than welcome at any of our Forum meets:rolleyes:;):)

hi ed. you wont upset me. i think mine looks more like a lorry as thats what it started life as. i built mine specialy for free parking,a kind of stealth truck . i quite like industrial estates and truck stops .suits me. i did it for a living so feel at home.
its much easier to free park in a truck as a camper looks like a camper. if you cant find somewhere to park in france ask at the police station they very often say park outside and let you use their toilets and fill up with water.
fire stations also good places .
see you on the road somewhere.
think we missed each other by minutes in portugal early this year at praia da tocha.
cheers alan.

Hi rafiki, You are all right in a motor home pretty well all the time.

But be careful of the Police with a

Thanks all. This is our full rig. When travelling we just use the roof tent. When we get there this is how we live:

We sleep on the roof and live in the Oz Tent.

Hadn't thought of it like that. Very novel :) I think we're a hybrid. :D
