Are we public enemy in the eyes of councils?

Looking at the number of motorhomers in the uk and we have only one report of bad behaviour and thats sceptical and circumstantial at best. I reckon we are doing well. Much better than our caravan buddies and much better than buses, lorries and white van med and dont get me started on the Lycra wearing 2 wheeled numpties we encounter every day. I reckon this report is a sign we are human and in the minority. Well done lads and lasses.

Interesting comments . Apart from the truly ignorant many people have no problem with vans parking there . Suggestions of water taps , £5 charges etc .
To be honest we can be a problem , mostly when it looks like the area has been taken over by vans .
On way back from France and there seem to be more towns with 'stattionement reglement' (feel free to correct that) notices as you enter . I assume this is the French equivalent of a TRO ?
Certainly seemed more common in Brittany .
Of course France is still great but not quite as free and easy as it once was . I would also argue that Britain is not as bad as many seem to think

Near Bordeaux and the local town has notices about no MH parking after 11pm and before 6am BUT they also provide Aires. The one by the lake is €14 a night the campsite we are on is €15 a night. We have a shower block and toilets they have a couple of taps and a disposal point.

The Aire is packed and our campsite where the MH’s are parked has been full but they still find room.

So why don’t the Local Council do something. We don’t all want to spend £30 a night to park in the rain.

Sorry to disappoint but unfortunately it seems to be common to blame all motorhome owners for the few Anger as campers ‘leave poo in dunes’ | News | Cambrian News While its something I would never consider it seems a growing number of people seem to be irresponsible in how they behave. These people are turning us all into pariahs where it is getting more difficult to wild camp. The simple solution would be to have aires such as in France but never likely to happen.

It looks pretty good to me. It seems to be pretty much what I've been trying to get councils to accept for quite a few years now. Far from being a public enemy this council is prepared to consider us an asset.

Just not exactly where some (most?) of us would like to be. This council is to discuss providing an aire.

Here's some of the comments.

"Despite council officers having found no “tangible evidence” of environmental crimes, complaints about the van owners included waste being thrown into the sea, so councillors requested a meeting with officers to discuss options". There never is any tangible evidence but plenty of councils lie and say there is. And we believe them.

"As for the alternative space for the vans, a site off King’s Parade near the sailing club has been earmarked", An aire – we like them in France; there's a possibility of one here.

"Councillors at the meeting will be asked to give their views on the latest council position, and the document added: “The effective management of camper vans can reduce complaints from local residents and contribute to a vibrant tourism economy."”

Nothing wrong with it. I'll be emailing the council with my (personal) support.

I guess I'm getting to be cynical in my old age but..

My expectation is that the council will go ahead with the overnight charge but will fail to find the money to create an "Aire".

I hope I'm wrong.

I've FOI ed the council to try and find out how many complaints they have recieved

An aire in your dreams,,,,their projection at £20 a night £65000 opimisitic at best and our members paying £20 per night we both know the answer.

They are looking to solve a perceived problem be interesting what the FOI turns up

The local authority is acting after receiving concerns from residents in New Brighton and Wallasey, citing the look of the vehicles

The document said they park there as it’s free, and “a proportion” of people staying in the vans do take advantage of local shops, contributing to the local economy.

no “tangible evidence” of environmental crimes

Reminds me of,

The local rag couldn't even be bothered to go take a photo.

Like everything in life there are those that spoil it for others, the cyclists who ride three abreast in the middle of the rd.
Car drivers who insist on doing 40mph in the outside lane etc,we to could do better.

Experience shows that there will have been at most a very small number of complaints expressed by the public. Probably none and none will be backed up with any evidence. At best a councillor will say that he has received complaints which he failed to pass on to the council but is doing so now.

The normal response is then to call for a ban. This council is doing things differently. Their report says it is free parking which encourages us and a £20 charge will discourage us. I think that's true. Elsewhere when a council proposed a £10 overnight charge there were a few of we wildcampers who said we wouldn't pay £10 – this for a car park, not a roadside. So the report probably has it right there.

There's no hint so far of a charge for the proposed overnight permitted parking. It does say that there will be a cost involved. If any agree, as I believe, that the proposed aire would be a good thing then we could, individually, show that the cost need not be great. There is no need to provide fresh water or waste disposal until it is shown that the “aire” is a success - but a largeishl charge without any services will not encourage success. Other councils have followed this route with experimental trials and this council could do the same. Or something like it.

I've not been able to determine exactly where the proposed site is – just somewhere off King's Parade by the Sailing Club; maybe that circular space or the roadside car park? I've not been able to find that report. Anyone found it? It looks great.

I like it.

You beat me by minutes - thank you.

It looks as though, if successful, that the charge will be very reasonable. 8 - 8 must be 8pm to 8am though it doesn't say so. £2?

I've emailed my views to Andrew Mossop - named as contact officer.
