Arctic air and other cooler types

Seems to be a lot of hype about these things. Just wondering if anyone has used one overnight in their van or home and if they’re worth the time and money?

Their efficiency in a motorhome I question because of how they work basically sucking air out of a motorhome there is sufficient argument that they affect correct vitiation of gas appliances

A true air conditioning system will re circulate the existing air volume and dump heat outside using filters good for sensible heat and a lot of allergens can be removed using filters useful for
hayfever sufferers

I don't understand cars are about as welcome as a turd in a punch bowl without air con nowdays yet we still don't do it in our homes,,,,Make good heaters in winter too very efficient ...

Inverter drive air source heatpumps are about the most efficient source of heating....
Mitsubishi and Daikin also make systems that provide heating/cooling AND replace your combi boiler for hot water too.
Fantastically efficient.

AFAIK the Artic Air is an evaporative air cooler, I've no idea how well they work, but I'm wary of increasing the humidity of the air inside a van.

What about a portable domestic air conditioner ? On ehu of course

A nice cool campervan ?

Yes they cool...
BUT you won't be getting a very peaceful night's kip (compressor is in the bit that lives inside)...
Anyone parked next to you will also be getting a share too as the noise also blows Down the exhaust hose.

I have just ordered one so I will see how it goes I have air con at home that I run all night at the moment set at 24 degrees which is just comfortable

I sleep with a fan on from May until the end of September and I find the noise blots out noise things that wake me up, I also have to wear a CPAP mask.

Good for you chap.... Glad it works for you....

However for others on here that are somewhat more sensitive to noise (even those that are kept awake by the noise of a compressor fridge)
Portable AC units are noisier than most folks are comfortable with when trying to sleep....
Let alone the noise from the exhaust hose....

Mind what do I know after the thick end of 30 years fitting/repairing and servicing AC units to a wide range of places ranging from Offices/process cooling to domestic?

Might be worth ordering some earplugs too ;-)

We usually end up parked near freezer lorries all night so used to noise not as bad as Huttoft when ther was a rave on the beach last year started at 9 at night and was still going at 10 the next morning now that was loud it was like having a Vauxhall Cora’s next to the van with a bass box

Sounds like hell....

IF that's the only way I could park.... I'd frankly not bother.

Yes, they are about 280% efficient. However, gas heating. although only about 93% efficient, is as cheap to run because the per-KW fuel cost of gas is under 33% of that of electricity.

Gas is slightly less inneficient on the air-conditioning side of things though.....

Funny you should say about gas being cheap, one day our power went of but i used a inverter to power a light and tv,next door wanted to know how i had tv when all houses in our street were off,i told him my tv was running on gas,it had him fooled.

it also depends on how much value you put on sensible humidity and filters that remove allergens. that's before you count the cost of heating water,

Problem with the portable is I will state again there is risk its operation affects correct vitiation of gas appliances, it is like sucking water out of a fish tank as opposed to a proper a/c noisy and forever emptying condensate ..disadvantages which enable a balanced value re their worthiness

SEER ratios are superb on the Mitsi /fujitsu domestic systems and use very little electricity other than the inrush on start up.

We got one a few weeks back. They are not Ac . Their personal coolers. As personal coolers they work well. We have a shelf next to the drop down bed and it puts a nice cool breeze there. During the day we have it on the floor and even the dog knows it’s a personal cooler and lays down in dont of it.It won’t cool the van at all . But then again your not spending a grand on Ac. Ours was £20 and for that money it works ok. Not too worried about it being evaporative. We boil kettles cook food and also breathe in the van so it’s not going to make that much difference. In the winter we can pull a litre of water off the windscreen and windows each morning with the Karcher licker . But if bothered leave a skylight open.
Im assuming it will work even better in Spain .

edit .... Forgot the nite lites it has . Choose from 7 different colors , or let them rotate . Nice little feature.
