Which is the best way, east to west or west to east. Would prefer to do any sharp hairpins downhill.
Thanks in advance.

West to east, in that way you'll be going down the two tight hairpins. Also, if the weathers good you'll get the fabulous view towards Loch Carron.

I ‘THINK’ that what use to be the real bad Righthand Hairpin when going up hill is actually a bit easier now than I remembered it as there seems a bigger ‘Viewpoint area that you can run into & Shunt if necessary. It’s NOT only the tight bend, it’s the Gradient ON the Hair pin as well that makes it bad I found
But yep West To East will take you Downhill & Probably save a bit of clutch l.

Had a senior moment reading this first off. Read it as Applewood. I was wondering where the hairpins were in Norfolk. Leave me alone. :sleep-027:

I would be wondering where the downhill's were too!

Going West to East however means that after the hairpins the passing places are on the left side and cut in to the rock and some are very tight for a Motorhome.

I always go in via Sheildaig, coffee in Nanny’s a ritual for me then onto the coast road to Applecross. Much better experience going down the pass as others have said views on a clear day are outstanding.
Mind you in Feb this year I had an encounter with a Japanese driver in a hire car just after leavimg Shieldaig, the road is narrow and they crapped themselves and were reluctant to attempt passing me. I ended up driving their car past my pvc lol. It’s not the first time that has happened, it’s nearly always hire cars or motorhomes. In fact last year on one of my many trips up there dropping down to Kishorn a tourist in a hire car ended up in the ditch on the side of the road. I just put the kettle on and chilled out waiting for the recovery truck to arrive.
