i am thinking about getting a trailer so i can take a motorcycle with me and then tour around the area when the van is parked, (looking for better spots/ shops etc ). anyone on this site tow a motorbike and if so what make of trailer do you use, i think i would need a box type then i could put the helmets /gear in it, also looking for someone that can make a trailer to my specs, has to fit in the garage and then store the bike in the trailer, i did look at the motolug but you have to walk the bike up onto it and knowing me would probaly over rev it or fall off. anyone help thanks.

hi, i have a monacle frame fits on towbar.it as a bracket that attaches to a plate behind the ball hitch. the front wheel fits in the monacle the rear stays on the road. strap handle bars down to bumper away you go . used to be used by rac. i also use it to tow trikes.
also have a spec frame bought from sammy millers years ago but hard to lift heavy bikes onto. bit like a dave cooper clip on off.

its an old GPO box van... converted... kitchen sink out etc etc
and it takes 2 blackbirds...
(ride in /out.. dropdown rear ramp/door).. and it takes all the kit:cool:

down side is... i'm over 40ft when it's attached ... and reversing is serious fun
.. mpg drops by 20% .. well it does at 90mph

spent months looking at options to carry the bike(s)...
a good second hand iffor williams was the next best option but serious money for a good 1... 2k maybe

i just happened to say to a golfing mate that i was on the look out when he said
"well..come aqnd have a look at this".. turned out to be the GPO thingie...
so instead of buying it off him i pay him for maintenance/upkeep in exchange for exclusive use..
he stores it cus i don't have the room.. everyone is happy :D

regards

That's not so clever, I read about someone who got 418 more in a pie!

Back on thread.
I use all sorts of trailers, 1 and 3 bike open and a 1 bike box trailer..
Box trailer is great for security BUT make sure you use CARABINERS on your straps...
Stops the risk of hooks bouncing out of locators and making bike soup in your trailer :(
I also have a camera in the box that I can bring up on my reversing camera screen [2 inputs]
Reversing camera is Ideal for towing, because you will not see most trailers in your mirrors :( so loose straps and punctures can be a harrowing experience :(
Heres a few pics of my set ups......

REMEMBER CARIBINERS are essential for the straps !! I use 7kn climbing ones

thanks for the ideas. will use the carbiners when i'm sorted, when you had it on open trailer was the bike covered in crud/dirt when towed. i have a harley davidson heritage about 320kg so no way would i tow with the front wheel on a hitch. ( what would happen if the back got a flat whilst towing?).

hi you could build a chop.ha ha. yes not good for that size of bike . i ride a drifter 1500 at home but for in the camper chuck a chinese dax in the boot. its enough for a bit of fun either 90cc or 110cc both a laugh. your harley must be like my drifter too heavy to do anything to high with . never mind have lots fun.

This is what I've been looking at doing. There was a bloke who sell's these on e-bay and they looked really good. Here a bit he's posted on you-tube

YouTube - BIKE CARRIER (BRMC ENGLAND)

At the moment I've got a scooter rack on the back of my Hymer, but it will only carry up to 120kg so I used a little Vespa... not really that effective for bigger bikes. The other problem I looked at was how much will the ferry company's charge if you a wheel racking system, would they class it has a trailer, or a bike rack??

Plus if you using the Aires in France, there are some that don't let you take a trailer onto them so may-be I'll sell my rack and buy one of these that you tow the front wheel with...

Anyway I'm looking forward to taking my bike out in the sun, so it may be time to head south for the winter....:)

All the best Andy

Yes the bike got really ****ty going through a rainstorm after around 1 month without rain..
Put a full width mudflap on but still wasn't perfect, hence the BOX !!
A good mate has converted an 8x 4 trailer.
It's got 3'6" foot sides [height of the bikes sports screen ] with a lift up lid hinged at the front :) drops the tail gate with a built on ramp, lifts lid and RIDES the bike in, to a wheel trap.."Suzuki Volusia"cruiser.. Sidestand down, handlebar sraps hooked over, already carabinered rachet straps tightened rt side first, sidestand up, lt side strap tightened.
Gets off bike, lowers trailer roof, trailer tailgate up.
2 padlocks, gives knowing smile gets in Van and gone.
2 fecking minutes tops :( i could kill the smug git
In that time I've just about got bike in the bloody box :(

EDIT
I stopped on 30 + Aires this year with my Hymer and Box never a problem, just be sensible..
Did a month with Looxor on the rack and my choice was even better :)

hi hymer man .similar to what i made bit differnt fittings .make your own its not hard if you or a mate can weld. what are you going to take. the spec frame one is ok with my 250 suzuki. i dont use it on the camper as its an artic truck. put 2 dax in back boot. if you google sammy millers they used to have them in their catalogue. awhile ago. my neighbour takes my 250 in his truck lifting it up by hydrolic crane . he wont ride a dax says it looks daft. i have had two of us on one both about 18 stone then turn up at a bike club and every body laughs but we dont care. pm me if you need more info. cheers alan.

i've already done the small bike on a rack years ago, it was alright but being 50cc no power on hills, so i thought i might as well take my proper bike with me and use it instead of leaving it at home in the garage. have found a firm called lathem trailers and they are prepared to make me a cutom trailer when i can get over to see them and discuss size's etc.:)
