Greetings, at the risk of this being asked before. I wonder If anyone knows how often I should empty my fresh water tank? As I use the M/H every two weeks, as its less than two years old, and the tank should be clean. I presume that the water is still OK to drink, and keep topping it fortnightly till the end of season when I empty it. I used to empty it regulary after each trip, just to be safe. But this seems a waste especially in a drought situation.
Rgd's Graham.

If you are topping up from treated municipal supply every two weeks then there is no need to ever empty the tanks until it is time to winterise.

I just keep topping up right through the season but use a couple of 2 litre bottles of fresh water for teeth and drinking cold, I'm not dead yet, but I've been in this toilet for a long time now.

funny

How often do you empty the cold water tank in your home if you have a cold water tank that is?Only empty the van tank if there is a chance of freezing, just keep topping it up as needed, add a sterilising tablet if you like now and again, that's what I have done for many years now, use a 5 litre bottle for drinking water and just use the tank for domestic stuff, works for us.

What is the toilet your in like? I'm just fed up with the same 4 walls.

You can always use this if you want to be sure Elsan Drinking Water Management we use it occasionally in the tank, it is completely tasteless unlike using Milton which takes ages to get rid of the taste. Personally I fitted a Pozzani filter for the drinking water, for us it worked out cheaper than buying bottled water when abroad.

I only empty at end of year. As a canny Scot I am not wasting such a valuable resource and with the current water shortage those who empty after every trip should reconsider.

I am on the same wave length as Vindiboy. I usually fill up every day, whenever the opportunity exists.

i do a full drain down after every trip just te same as a winter drain down, we drink from the tank so i dont leave any water in there.

For those that drain down after every trip, why?

We also drain after every trip. We drink the water from the fresh tank and find that it starts to taste if left in a plastic tank and pipes for too long. We don't usually bring much back at the end of a trip tbh and like to empty anyway to avoid a surprise freeze (which can probably happen anytime between October and April these days!) Also, I reckon 100 litres of fresh water through my domestic water metre costs approx 20p, so I'm happy to treat myself to a fresh tank full for each trip :)

same as croftland1, just like the idea of fresh water no taste, or very little, and little chance of frost damage, my pipes have frozen solid before on drive, luckily very little water in so no damage...........

As long as you are sure you fill up from a good clean source then no need to keep emptying.

100 litres of water weighs 100kg so with the cost of fuel it may be worth filling up at your destination.

Beware sterilising your tank. Unless you do it properly, you may only kill off the beneficial bacteria and leave pathogens with no competition. Better to give it a good flush with fresh water when ever you empty it. If you do Sterilise it. I would flush out the sterilised water and refill. If it will kill Anthrax, I don't fancy drinking it.

I used Milton before but received dire warnings that the chlorine would corrode the boiler lining and it would end up like a colander. Not sure how many decades it would take but "we are all doomed"

The boiler is stainless but apparently gets pitted. Truma do not recommend this type of chemical.
