im not bad, but its years since i touched the inside of a pc, or kept up with the latest technology

my main laptop HD packed up....and i have a old one i was given, a AMD 1.8ghz 256 of ram

anyway my GF said she would buy me some more memory, as its slower than a women learner driver lol

i knew i wanted a sodimm, i know what a sdram is, i know what a DDR etc is

i remember im sure, years ago AMD did a laptop procc, called a mobile, with lower power consumption, and i think diff L1 and L2 caches. and called it the AMD - M

i ordered a a 1gb single stick for AMD-M turns out to be DDR long for desktops.

so years ago, when AMD did a AMD-Moblie (which the stickers says on the lappy) they never called it a AMD-M and instead used that for their normal desktop machines?

after i first ordered it, they sent me a DDR2 2GB sodimm, which was no use at all. so only just got the one they say i ordered, and the fault is mine (actually its running in this desktop machine im writing this one...a old AMD 3000+ Athlon...its the last pc i build lol, as i said im well out of the latest hardware!!)

i have now ordered a pair of 512mb Sodimms which they say are the correct ones.

anyway, just curious if im right or wrong..if im wrong then im happy to apologise to them

16 and 17 on the list here

Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Series Laptop Memory Ram :: Offtek.co.uk, The Computer Memory Superstore :: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Series Laptop Memory Ram

im not very good with words, esp long sentences but im usually top notch with computer stuff.

:D

this is what i use when doing mem upgrade or reccomend peeps to use the cpu chip doesnt affect memory it is the board in which it fit the mother boardso if you know name of laptop and brand then you should be able to worki t out RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. i know all about memory types, going back to the very old SIMMs. its just that i thought when AMD brought out a mobile cut down proccessor i thought they called it the M, but the company says no its the otherway around.

Before you try the new ram there are a few free programs that you can download that may help you.
The first is CCleaner from here
Download CCleaner 3.13.1600 - FileHippo.com

Fantastic program that clears out lots of junk and speeds up your internet.

The second is Malwarebytes from here
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Great for finding and deleting Malware which is the latest from of internet attacks from nasty people.

Both of these are trusted and free, anyone with any knowledge of computers will have these on their system and I have never heard of one complaint about either.
Download and run both, at the same time if you want, they will take a couple of hours for a full scan but both are worth it. You may have to switch off your internet while they are scanning so run them when you go to bed.

Yes Sir

Dimm's in desktop's
so Dimm's in Laptops

Nothings changed sodimm's always in lappies they are shorter with a different notch possition

DDR's are dimm's noty sodimm's

Hope that helps

thats not the problem, it was a fresh install of XP, plus o/b graphics. 256mb isnt really enough, it didnt take long for it to want to say it was memory low. i always have firewall, av, malware etc software lie adaware.

i know, just like SDRAM has different notches to DDR ram (im using a 2700 and 333 fine)

i was asking, did AMD call their processor when they did one for a laptop, with lower power etc a M, as they called it AMD-Mobile)

i have sticks of memory here going back to EDO's, even got ISA cards and prior to that, it just what AMD called their processors that i was stuck on (i started with a Duron, then Althlons upto the 936?? pin config mobo now)

I remember the -m processor too, it ran cooler and was great for overclocking.

i never had one back then (as said, i was given this laptop pretty recently)
but i remember the first batches of Duron 1800's they released a overclockers paradise, i cranked those babies very high and stable!

anway the 2 512mb sodims came, i put the first one in underneath in the empty slot(it had 256mb) and and it flew, bootup, everything....fantastic.

then i took top of lappy to pieces, removed keyboard and got to the other slot, took out the 256 and popped in the other new 512, tried it again and it crashes at bootup, says errors in the op system, mmmmmmmmmm put back in the orig 256 and all is ok. had a quick look in the bios but its very basic, cant find or change anything to let it know what i have done.

before it would take 10 min to start and loadup everything, now its seconds, no hangs etc. so the 256 and 512 is userble and great, its only got a little HD (plus its a AMD athlon 1800) so only for web surfing etc as a backup machine.

THIS PC i have had for years, where it was rock solid, stable etc has been a nightmare in last few weeks...not getting BSODS, but if i leave it (its on 24/7) i find it crashes or just freezes. it can also do this when im booting up. whole screen just freezes. i would have said it was grapthics card problem, but its o/b and i dont have a spare card to turn off o/b and use AGP slot for a card.

annoying as hell

its not a heat issue, as i blast it offten with a can of air and remove the fans etc. its only a AMD Athlon 3000+ which i have had for i guess 7 years. i thought it could be a dodgy memory stick, so i removed 1 which left one, but still did it. now got 2x 1gb DDR as one is the wrong one they sent me last time.....

I think I am the only one that says you need a new machine, unless of course I have misread the date of your posts.:)

Or you are a fan of vintage computers, Atari, Space Invaders etc ?

well a new machine means new money :-(

i hate to throw owt away, and like to plod along with what i have. never been a latest piece of hardwhere person like some are.

nowt wrong with old stuff, i still dabble with 80's stuff :)

Yes, I know that, I'm like that with clothes, cars and the place where I live, but internet and communications technology is a pain, I wish my first machine still worked, it probably does (in fact its probably landfill) but is unpractical if I want to reply to you so quickly on here! Remember dial up!

BUT my Damned LPs still work on the record player!:D
