Any thoughs on a replacement for our Hymer? Rapido?

Views sort.

We just sold our Hymer to a lovely couple who, we hope, will enjoy many miles of adventures with it. So now begins the search for the replacement; we are quite happy to take our time choosing, getting the right MH for proposed long-term ownership. We quite fancy the looks of the Rapido but have little knowledge of the make other than what we have read in the motorhome press and from briefly looking at some at shows. So we would really welcome comments from forum members and owners, both past and present. We think that it will most likely be an A class again for the main reason that we have never seen a Rapido low profile on a Mercedes chassis with a fixed bed other than the short ones, is it 749?, and we don’t think this will be quite enough to be suit our needs. We do not want a rear lounge model. We did once meet a couple who had a Rapido 7099 and about that size would be of great interest, but the trouble is we have a very strong preference for MHs with rear wheel drive and also I need an automatic. Are there any Rapido low profile models of that size on the Mercedes? Our “wanted” list includes that rear wheel drive and auto box plus no daily making up of beds (so either a rear, fixed, bed or a drop down) and we like LHD. We're not really fussed about a huge kitchen as long as it has a large’ish fridge and some prep area. A nice bathroom with a separate shower is quite high on our list. The lady in my life likes to relax on a settee but as long as the MH has captains seats that can swivel to use as an arm chair I’m happy. We are not fussed about dinette seating preferring a second settee if there is a choice. A garage for my buggy would be nice rather than it being out in the weather on a rack so this would mean a high level rear bed. We have loads happening through this year so we would most likely shop for next year - there is no rush. Ideally this MH would cost about £20 - £24K. Any thoughts or opinions would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Much searching later.............

Hi *****,

Thanks for your comments. We know it is going to be very hard to find something that will have the build quality and the sort of "thought out" planning found in the Hymers but we just can't find a Hymer that is the size we want; about 6.5mt, with a garage that will take my buggy and have everything else, a reasonable settee for madam, auto box, RWD, and a comfortable bathroom. Everything now seems to be built with the Euro-lounge which we specifically don't want as she tells me is bl**dy uncomfortable for lounging (I prefer my armchair up front). Years ago Hymer made a layout which had a single bed across the back and this would suit us fine, giving a nice day bed. We think we may have found our ideal layout in a Frankia which is hopefully out there somewhere on a 416 chassis giving mucho payload.

Have you thought about a Pilote?

Hi Millie,

Yes Pilote is another make that is being considered. We are very taken with a Frankia I 6500 ED we have seen on a website and that is looking a strong favourite as it fills all the bills apart from payload as the one we have seen is on a 316 chassis and only has about 280kg payload ex-works. We will search for one built on 416 (which was available) or find out about an upgrade to 3850kg which would give us 630kg payload, sorted! Frankia is part of Pilote group.

 Wished I had known ....think we might want a Hymer

Hi,

We put it on eBay and had 9 people contact us about it. We sold ours to a lovely couple who we hope get lots of great adventures from travelling in it. It was a lovely MH for two people; just so much room for everything. The only thing wrong with it for us was it being right hand drive which surprises a lot of people but after 20+ years of driving left hand drive it felt all wrong for me. We don't intend to replace it for at least this year as we have a daughter's wedding and lots of other things happening so we wouldn't get much use and we are fed up with having an expensive, motorhome shaped, garden ornament so we think we will take a rest for now.

Regards,
