does no-one have a people carrier? or are they considered no good?

I run a Citroen Berlingo Multispace, it's my second one and it's amazing what you can get in it.

With the back seats out you have the space of a Berlingo van, and I've had armchairs, king size matresses, and even a dismantled garden shed in there. Put the seats back and it can seat 5 adults and carry their luggage, ideal for airport runs etc.

Mine has the 1.9D engine which is just about bullet proof and economical to run, I get 45-50 mpg on motorway runs and it will sit at 70 - 80 mph all day long.

There are even companies that convert them into mini campers.

That's what I run anyway, hope this info is useful to you.

Get a decent Mazda Bongo. There are still a few good ones around. One of mine will be up for sale after next week.

I too have Berlingo multispace. Cost me £8000 brand new on scrappage scheme and Citroen discount.
Best car I've ever had for reliability/versatility.

The problem with bongos is they were never imported diectly to the UK, and because all are grey imports it restricts the number of companies that will insure and perhaps parts can be an issue.albeit a superb vehicle.

Certainly the Berlingo is a good choice lots on the second hand market fully serviced the original owners on the motability scheme. The same holds true of the Vauxhall Zafira.and the Citroen Picasso.

If you want bigger for me KIA is worth considering lots of space and versatility, and they dont command the premium in the second hand market that perhpas a VW Sharan or Ford Galaxy might.

Nissan tinos are often overlooked and deliver bang for the buck,

My lady neighbour has a Zafira and has said she will swap to berlingo next time around. The huge tailgate and sliding doors make it a dream to load and the seats come right out unlike the original smaller berlingo. The new 09 on model is built on the C4 chassis.
My tyres are on 23.5k miles and the fronts/drive look like they'll still go to 30k.
I dont do loads of miles so got the 1.6 petrol. 22k mile service intervals

I stand corrected re parts, and I did say a good vehicle ?

who do you insure with for the benefit of the OP ...grey imports can be an issue with the mainline insurers

hi, with the artic 5er camptons .but becuse the bongo isnt a full conversion .then lifesure are the ones to go to. they give a discount to bongo fury members as well.
shame i might convert it to mhme then in summer just ins bongo in winter the atric . makes sense.
to be honest ian and marion who run the fury club and tracey the office person are like the gods of bongo. if its bongo they know where when who. sank a few beers with them well ian and marion.
give bongo mission control a call. 0114 255 0836 . the nice bit is its like owning a vw camper 30 yrs ago . great friends and always good parties . get to a bongo bash you dont know what you are missing.

I have the 1.2 petrol Kangoo van and my husband and in-laws have the car version with the same engine. My husband has made a folding bed for his and has used it for camping.

They're a good alternative to a Berlingo, 53mpg, 18k service intervals, £125 road tax (for car), over 100k problem-free miles. The driving position is excellent with lots of head and leg-room and easy access for rear passengers. My husband will soon be replacing his - either with another Kangoo or possibly a Berlingo. Highly recommend both!

The Bongo I'm putting up for sale is a AFT and is fully converted double upstairs and a single rock and roll down. Two seater at mo but belt is in place for a third seat on the R&R bed. Spares no prob. Mine is one of the better ones around having been servixced on a 6 monthly basis by the chap who imported her. I also still have the rear six seats.
Insurance is with Adrian Flux and costs 280 comprehensive.

I ran a Ford Tourneo Connect (53 plate) from new until last year. Based on lwb Connect van, but full 5 seater. Could still put a pallet in the rear with all seats in place. Great tow car too (We used it for delivering caravans & trailers). Its now being used as a hotel courtesy bus in Malta. Ford Tourneo Connect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

thanks guys, really appreciate all the info and advice. loads of choice and lots to consider...thanks

hi i have 9 year old 2litre diesel zafira never had any probs good load capacity and good on fuel cheers john

Used to run a 2.4D (non turbo) VW Caravelle, L reg.
It seated 7, had removeable seats, windows down each side (I had them tinted), I removed the back seats so it seated 5 and a space in the back that could take three pushbikes (removed the carpet and put laminate floor down in the back).
Our family of four drove it down to the south of France with a frame I made up in the back for a bed that had enough space underneath for suitcases. An airbed was used overnight for three of us with my son sleeping on the bench seat behind the front seats.
Used it for work with my tools in the back, and with all seats out the van has rescued a few motorbikes from another forum I am on in sheffield.
The rear of the VW will take an 8ft by 4ft board, which is a good indication of the space available.
It cost me £2000, 8 years ago, and I sold it for £2000 2 years ago.
A cheaper option would be to go for a VW Transporter without the windows and seats though.

Never did check the mpg, but could not have been that horrific. reliability? Sound vehicles!
Insurance was almost £200 for an old geezer like myself!

thanks, never crossed my mind to even look at caravelles, good idea about space in back, as mine will have to be used to transport work tools around aswell, worth a look.

I have a 7 seat C4 Piccasso VTR + 1.6HDI 6spd Auto AND Manual & its great

I also have a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso with EGS 1.6 HDI but the Exclusive model. And yes they are great, can't fault it, a truly superb and well appointed MPV.
But, I wouldn't recommend one unless that person was prepared for the eventual high financial outlay. There is so much high tech stuff on these that the cost of non-service repairs is frightening.

hi ,ive just got a seat alahmbra ,same as the ford galaxy 1.9 td and i must say i am well pleased with the mpg at a shown 50plus local running about on the trip /fuel computer , and its also rather nippy when pushed . seems to be plenty of room when the rear seats are removed for a blow up mattress for the odd night or two away . so all i am waiting for is some good weather to give it a try out ,guess i may have to wait a while ,but at least now i have a few nights wilding to look forward to
