The age of decent customer service has not passed!!

Starter motor on our 91 Pug J5 packed up on thursday whilst we were on our jollies, tried the usual, hammer, rocking in gear but no go, quick call to The AA (followed by a long wait :()

thursday evening was rather impressed with myself as got the dead starter off with the meagre tools I had on board, friday morning starts calling round, no joy and the one place that could get one couldn't do so until monday :(

ended up speaking to Andy Moore, he said to leave it with him and he'd phone me back,

5 minutes later he's back on the phone, can't get my bus cross refered, so he asks for part number off the starter.

He's back on the phone a few minutes later, still not getting it so he says he'll come and collect the old starter and take it to his parts emporium, okay he was only 5 minutes down the road from the camp site but even so, top bloke.

comes and picks it up as arranged and calls about a half hour later saying he's got 3 possibles on order, expects them in about 2:30.

sure enough he calls again just after 2:30 saying he's got the right one in his hand, not only does he offer to deliver it to me but even supplied a piece of sand paper to clean the mating ring and at £130 I know I could have probably gotten one for a bit less but the level of service I had from him I would have paid £50 more....

he also said if I had any problems fitting to give him a call and he'd send someone up to help me out!

whilst I wasn't happy the starter failed on me it is an old bus after all so these things are expected I don't think I couldn't have had a better outcome.

Sorry for the long post but I thought it was good to show the amount of effort this guy went to for someone who had just wandered in off the street as it were, very impressed :) :)

Good service - which as you say seems very thin on the ground these days.
Was the motor new or re-con? It was probably just the brushes worn out on yours but where can you buy those nowadays?
I can remember being stuck on a campsite in Hawes with a non-operational starter a long time ago. It was Sunday, the local garage was closed and I had work 6am Monday. I finished up cutting little triangles of cardboard from a cornflakes (?) packet and packing the brush springs out with them. It worked and lasted until I could get some new brushes from a local auto-electricians.

Had a 7.5ltr. Ford Ltd Station Wagon for years. Starter motor packed up in Torquay and it turned out to be cheaper to get one shipped from the States than to replace the armature itself.
Puzzled yet?
The armature was produced in Wakefield but the cost quoted for supplying me one directly was more than the complete US. cost + shipping.
