Always get out if broken down

A few months ago I was travelling down the M6 when a saw a motorhome on the hard shoulder with its hazards on, it must have had a rear lounge as I could see an elderly couple sat at the rear one at each side holding cups and looking out of the rear window, presumably looking out for the recovery people.

Full of tracking spyware, here is what i got on the link.

I have often pondered this. What if its the middle of winter and you breakdown in the freezing pishing rain or snow? Presumably on a motorway you might be lucky enough for the Traffic Wombles to come along and you can sit in their warm Range rover in front of your broken down vehicle but they are not on all roads, just motorways.

I think quite a few people with on-board facilities would keep nipping in and out, with all fingers and toes crossed of course.

If you can't pull completely off the road, wondering if theres an argument to be made that blocking the road might be safer?
If you are going to be a hazard, be a proper hazard.
No. I'm not suggesting getting barbie and awning out. 🤔

We broke down on the M11 several years ago and where we stopper the embankment dropped away sharply and being a LHD my passenger who was disabled would have had to exit into a live lane to get out and we were told to sit on the nearside if possible and belt up and hope. Being dead in the water so to speak no flashers or hazards and the Traffic wombles drove past on two occasions.

Get out always. stand at the rear not front or side of vehicle as your movement's can be seen, From on coming traffic. Some mite stop to help you. Turn your steering to the nearside if possible.

we had some longhorn cattle escape on to the A46, 2 lorries ,a southbound and a northbound ,immediately slewed their rigs across the road and closed the road completely . none of the other drivers could have known what was happening, and they all seemed to accept their fate ,so maybe it's a good move !

Every morning on the m2 behind me there is a breakdown and then a pileup with sirens walling.

Or maybe just looking out for the Grim Reaper.
A friend of mine worked for Highways Agency, he was reassigned to work on M25, after several near misses he resigned as he decided the odds on living until retirement where not good.
