Urban Myth / Scaremongering!?!?

Heard this from 2 independant MH'ers who avoid Aires like the plague. Gassing occupants thro' the vents and robbing them.

Needless to say they heard this story second \ third hand....

Clearly criminals will find creative and unsavoury ways of getting your money/goods but I think its a bit of good old fashion scaremongering...or am I being naive

another load of bull zen, just scaremongering, get on and enjoy your hobby. If you do a search on here this has been threaded before.

but you can be robbed while asleep .it happened to me this year. fit lots of locks and bolts .could happen in tesco carpark as well so take care .i,ve had it happen three times in about 35yrs of having a camper so it may never happen to some. i mean robbing not the gassing. i think drink plays apart of not waking up.
cheers alan.

Total scaremongering Dave, This has been debated many times on the site, No one has ever met anyone to whom gassin happened, It was also quoted as 'Fact' that lorries get gassed, I pointed out that I work for a company that runs about 500 artics, we have never been warned by the police or any reputable agency that this is a 'fact' that we need to be aware of.

So forget the gassing its not going to happen but do be aware that 'creeper' thefts do happen. Lock the cab, lock the hab door and bolt it use an alarm if fitted.

Don't get paranoid IMHO if you use common sense its as safe out there as it is at home :D

I have actually met 2 couples who swore they had been gassed, one of them from the amount I saw them drink I don't think that gassing them would have had any effect anyway:rolleyes:
As said it's a complete myth if you look into the facts
You would require an awful lot of gas - never heard of any empty cylinders found
A motorhome leaks like a sieve - if not you would stand more chance of being suffocated
Putting people into a deep sleep is dangerous - hospital have trained personnel & people still unfortunately die under anesthetic, never heard of any deaths
Many of these so called gasses used are highly flammable - I haven't seen any motorhomes exploding.

Robberies do happen (been robbed ourselves while we were wide awake but thats a different story) they are more likely to rob your van while you are out. Some areas are more risky than others, if you don't feel safe move to somewhere where you are more comfortable. Take precautions, if you have alarms, locks etc. USE THEM (the couple who said they had been gassed didn't put the alarm on that night. The thieves won't let you know when they will rob you so ALWAYS assume that you need to use preventative measures. Don't get paranoid, just read all the threads on this & other forums showing evidence that gassing just can't happen.

My worry is some idiot of a thief reading all this gassing rubbish & actually try it & some peoples lives could be at risk.

In my honest opinion this was started by a person or persons who wanted to make a credible Insurance claim, after most probably leaving their van unlocked, and having suffered a loss through theft.
I have had a sleep tight alarm fitted which is excellent for us it goes off when somebody approaches the van when we are inside or out, just a warning before damage can be done upon entry, went off the other day because a cat got curious, but as it sounds inside first to wake you up no one was bothered.
Locks are the best deterant when out and about, not just abroad, the U.K. is not an entirely crime free zone as we all should be well aware.

Hi all.

I've heard this one & its a bit of a myth. When i've traveled around France & chat to other people they will tell you the same thing.

Just think how much gas they would need to fill your van & put (keep) you asleep, it would cost a shed load. In fact they would make more money if they nicked the gas & just sold it :D

Its like camping or parking anywhere if it looks iffy or your not happy with the look or feel about an area don't stop there & move on.

Have fun.

Merciful Heavens, you would have thought that this one had been put to bed by now, wouldn't you?
You still meet people who will swear blind that their friend knew some-one who once stopped at a service staion and they got to talking about this person down near ......... ........ (insert place of your own choice) who been talking to this Mormon/Jehovahs Witness/Quaker ('cos they never tell a lie) and they said that etc etc etc :D

This happened to me this weekend !!

I've just spent 4 days away & can confirm this happened to me.

We spent the night camped up. We both had a few beers (may be i had a few more) & a nice chilly ;) that night.

When we woke up the next morning nothing was missing & the doors where locked but there was a funny smell of gas. Well it wasn't me :D

Gassing my ar#e

When we where robbed near Barcelona while asleep we would prefer to think that the reason we didn't wake during the robbery was due to the long drive that day.
Certainly not down to alcohol, and hopefully not Gas.:(

I thought that the whole reason to go to Barca was to get robbed - hope that you were alright and no-one got hurt

I would have thought your safer on an aire where everyone can see whats going on around the vans than on a shady tree packed campsite where crims can easily hide in the shadows.

I dont have an alarm, just crappy standard Peugeot locks, often sleep with the windows open when its hot. If they want to be in they will be but I reckon it would be rare when your in the van. However Im not so laid back when camping in the UK, especially England. France feels so much safer.

Currently 20 miles from Calais on a lovely grassy Aire. Left my maps and flipping sat nav out on the grass all afternoon accidentely while out on the bike. Still there when I got back.

Home tomorrow BooHoo

A true gas experience. It happened to me in Exeter when I was parked outside my parents house, big family doo so me and the missus slept in the caravan.
Early hours the van was being fiddled with so I went outside and found 2 lads out of their heads trying to pull the gas pipes off to get a sniff. But they were so far gone that they didnt even know I was there, I just told them there was a great party round the corner that they could get into and they went crawling off.
No urban myth

vive le bull****.Only second or third hand? This one is a fiftieth hand screamer. It may have happened somewhere-probably did -long times past- if at all! But yes, thre has been over the years a varied list of tricks perpetrated -mainly on the med coast near Spain, by (most likely North Africans) preying on tourists with campers and caravans which if I remember right is where this one originated, so yes-there ARE thieves And motorhomes are sure to have valuables aboard, and so, looking as expensive as most m'homes doo , they do take any opportunity.Use your loaf and keep well clear of social housing areas.
