Air cooling!

Looking for your ideas / advice on air cooling inside the motor home, while static. We have a drop down bed that gets pretty warm - also, the kids are in bunks at the back which are like little warm air compartments. We can’t have roof mounted air con because our roof vent is 50 x 70 so it seems nothing fits it. I wondered about the Fiamma Turbo kit fan, that fits multiple size roof vents - would it do the job and can you use the fly screen while it’s on? Or does anyone use freestanding fans? If so, how many and where do you place them? I’d also be interested in something we can use to keep our dog cool for shortish periods when we leave her in the van. Thanks in advance! Gail

I’m in Spain at the moment and we are using 2 Endless Breeze 12v fans. We move them around the van as required during the day, but at night I site them in the roof lights over the beds, pointing down over us. They work really well. They are powerful but don’t draw too much electricity.

I bought them from America on Amazon.com and I think they were about £80 each delivered.

On the rare occasion we have EHU, we run 3 other electric fans constantly as well.

I'll be trying a 4inch fan I bought at Maplins before they went belly up. That blowing over a wet towel. Not tried it in Demi. But it worked in Cyprus. When I was a brave soldier. Defending the Empire from the marauding Turk. Did I ever tell you the story ?
In truth I had been posted back to Colchester three weeks before the invasion. We used to go to a quiet beach called Fig Tree Bay at weekends. Just a beach hut bar. Nothing special. Now known as Ayia Napa. Folks on holiday went to Famagusta.

Air con is virtually useless unless you’re on a decent hook up they eat power And even then it’s a toss up from being deaf or cool my van came with it fitted and I’ve only used it a couple of times the skylights with the fan built in don’t realy cool van down either load of noise and energy for very little gain.

We got a large cool mat that fits both dogs from B&M for £9.99, works well and the dogs like it okay

Saw something advertised recently somewhere (can't find it) which was a cube shaped gadget which you filled with water . Could run off mains or USB connector don't know power . Basically designed for office desk or bedside table

An alternative to the Transcool is a simple 12v desk-style fan, and a damp teatowel. Put one end of the towel in a dish of cold water, blow the fan across it. Same effect, lower cost.

Great idea . See post 6

Trouble with evaporative coolers in the UK is our generally high humidity (higher humidity level less effective they are)
Also the material used as a media for the water to perculate through gets stale over time....
Think damp used tea towel or damp dog....

Not nice frankly...

Also IF the have a recirculation type water system...
You 'can' get a build up of bacteria...
Unlikely your going to get it warm enough for legionella bacteria to flourish in this country (around body temp)
But worth being careful IF anyone has asthma or other breathing issues as the spores involved can be detrimental.

Thanks everyone. Might have a look at the Cool My Camper - and will definitely look at the cooling coat for the pooch! Did get excited about the evaporative cooler till I read the thing about the humidity.... we do a lot of our holidaying in Scotland 😂

Looks like it . As you say don't know how effective they are , or how much power they require .
Surely somebody on here will know ?

I watched some youtube demos of this - or an equivalent device. End result .... Save your money!

Trouble with evaporative coolers in the UK is our generally high humidity

UK is damper than other countries where evaporative coolers are regularly used but still dry enough to work here during our hottest weather. Cooler here now but even so RH low enough to make it of some benefit:
Yesterday
15.1 ° and 77% RH at 08:00 Hrs
21.0 ° and 46% RH at 16:00 Hrs
16.2 ° and 76% RH at 23:00 Hrs

Today Forecast
19 ° and 48% – 46% RH between 16:00 and 19:00 Hrs.

As you say Legionella unlikely to flourish in UK weather but care should be taken.

Wash your tea towel media frequently! :scared:

Trouble is with the lower humidity figures you have posted.... You also have lower temps....

Evaporative cooling relies on higher ambient and higher temps,....

That's why it isn't used much in the UK....

I install aircon for a living and believe me IF it worked I'd be fitting it all day long as, it would be a heap cheaper than compressor based systems.
