AIB no longer issue hard copies of insurance documents.

Not a problem if travelling in the UK since the police can check on the Motor Insurance Database if you're covered, or not ...

But if travelling outside the UK you will need to have hard copies so remember to ask AIB to send them.

i have done this for many years - if you dont have your policy how do you know what you are buying or what you are covered for ?

They sent everything to me by email as .pdf attachments, so I can print them out if I need to. I realise not everyone has a printer though...

That's correct, I was sent the documents by email.

My concern relates to production of documents to the authorities abroad. I would prefer to have originals to avoid any doubts ...

I just renewd with AIB and got my hard copy thru today?

Probably depends who presses which button ...

I was told it is now their policy in order to save paper (and presumably some expense).

Keep a copy on a smartphone or tablet.
But yes a hardcopy is best and easier for anyone checking to be satisfied.

I keep all documents along V5C(copy) and MOT printed and on phone

I haven’t had hard copy of motor insurance for years now, so long I can’t remember when. It just seems natural now to get the documents in email or through. A portal and read/print as you wish. I do remember when I first got it thinking someone may just think I was faking it but never had any problems.

Move with the times and save trees, I hate printing stuff even at work, sooner we can go completely paperless the better for me, I will be queueing up for a chip in my wrist :)

Save docs to a usb pen, anyway linux runs odf and so should everybody.
Though if ask by police to show papers here at station they may refuse a electronic document.:hammer:

we just print 2 copies of the certificate... one goes in the vehicles office file tother in the glove compartment of the relevent vehicle.

i still find it quicker to check mot and insurance details by retreiving the paper copies ... indeed often cant remember which company an individual vehicle is insured with till ive looked at the paper.... then theres the hassle of remembering the password to log on.

i dont see how they can legally refuse a hard copy in the post....not everyone has a computer

Took out a new policy with AIB on Friday... To cover new (to us) motorhome....
Policy emailed to me and told that documents would follow in the post so guess we will see...
I'm not too bothered either way to be honest as long as its insured and I have email to read details.
In fairness the actual certificate is next to worthless in reality as you could have a certificate showing you as, insured even though you cancelled the policy.

I always thought a certificate of insurance, and driving licence there is a legal obligation to be able to produce at the roadside. A concession was made by ACPO to issue producers but that as always been legally a concession ?

So whether you generate a hard copy or your broker not a bad idea saves time later.

Amazing how insurers want to charge documentation charges and admin charges at every juncture, yet seem unwilling to do anything meaningful for their £25 OR MORE

I agree. I never print anything off unless I really have to. Its how it all works now so a print off of an insurance certificate to take with you is perfectly valid. Its just a piece of paper and no different to what someone would send you in the post.

Another advantage of having them emailed is that if you lose it you can just print it off again. This could be extremely useful if your abroad. Ive done this before, needed to print an official document abroad so I just went into a Tourist information and asked if I could log into my email and print off an important document. No problem. Internet cafes (do they still exist) Libraries etc will do the same.

I guess you could email to the policeman ?

Check all the pages of the pdf, the one I got sent 6 months ago from AIB had an issue with the breakdown info page, they had to send me a hard copy due to the problem ( they may have fixed the issue by now).

House Ins / Car Ins / Motorbike Ins / Payslips / Bank Statements / Travel Ins / Breakdown .... all pdf these days ?

Print off what ya need or don't. We take print-outs of necessary bits when away. Crap bit is the admin fee.
