Hi everyone,
You may have noticed that we’ve started rolling out a new AI moderation system across the forum.
I wanted to explain what it does, why we’re doing it, and where we are with it right now.
Over time, we’ve seen more and more posts being used as a personal soapbox — particularly around political and, in some cases, outright racist views.
That creates two problems:
So, AI moderation has been introduced to act as a gatekeeper — it checks posts against the forum rules before they go live, helping to keep the forum's tone in line with what most members expect.
I’ll be honest — in its initial testing, it’s been a bit too trigger-happy.
Some posts that were clearly banter, humour, or harmless conversation have been blocked when they shouldn’t have been. A few of you have already experienced that today.
That’s not the intention.
So I’ve now updated the system to better recognise:
Wild Camping has always had a bit of personality to it, and that’s staying.
Just to be clear — some things are not changing:
Even if something is framed as a joke, if it could genuinely cause offence, it won’t be allowed.
This system will not be perfect overnight.
I will continue to retune and retrain it so that it fits how Wild Camping actually works — not some generic idea of a forum.
If you feel your post has been moderated unfairly:
The aim here is simple:
Thanks for your patience while this is being tuned — we’ll get it right.

- It takes a huge amount of time to manually moderate
- More importantly, it upsets members who come here to enjoy the community, not to be exposed to that kind of content
So, AI moderation has been introduced to act as a gatekeeper — it checks posts against the forum rules before they go live, helping to keep the forum's tone in line with what most members expect.
Where We Are Right Now
I’ll be honest — in its initial testing, it’s been a bit too trigger-happy.
Some posts that were clearly banter, humour, or harmless conversation have been blocked when they shouldn’t have been. A few of you have already experienced that today.
That’s not the intention.
So I’ve now updated the system to better recognise:
- Humour
- Banter
- Context within a conversation
Wild Camping has always had a bit of personality to it, and that’s staying.
What Still Won’t Be Allowed
Just to be clear — some things are not changing:
- Racism or discriminatory content
- Posts that could reasonably be taken as offensive or harmful
- Content that crosses the line from banter into abuse
Even if something is framed as a joke, if it could genuinely cause offence, it won’t be allowed.
This Is an Ongoing Process
This system will not be perfect overnight.
I will continue to retune and retrain it so that it fits how Wild Camping actually works — not some generic idea of a forum.
If you feel your post has been moderated unfairly:
- Let me know
- I’ll review it
- If it fits the rules, I’ll reinstate it
The Goal
The aim here is simple:
- Keep the forum welcoming and enjoyable
- Remove the need for constant manual firefighting
- Allow humour and personality to thrive
- Stop the minority from spoiling it for everyone else
Thanks for your patience while this is being tuned — we’ll get it right.
Phil
