Hi guys ,ineed some advice with fitting a bike rack to my 1991 talbot autoquest 320 , i bought a fiamma carry bike ul 2 bike rack for the van , have been told that there are no support bars in the back wall to support the bike rack so i have to purchase some fitting bars that cost 80 to take the rack and the company say on top of that they want 200 to fit it.Apparently the back wall is a sndwich of ally, insulation , and ply ,i know i will have to take out the kitchen to fit the rack , what im wondering is can i make some kind of a spreader plate to help support the rack , what kind of size should it be , any of you guys done it with a similar van , anyway take care you guys and i am looking forward to your replys
cheers

from what you sayi would get some flat metal approx 3/4 mm thick, length as long as can be fitted and probs 4"/5" wide that should spread the weight over the panel but you could also make brackets so they fit the side walls too so the tension is on the side walls too if you understand what i mean!!

cheers for the reply mate ,i see what you mean , only problem is i dont think i can run it the whole with of the van as the toilet and shower are in the passenger side rear of the van ,i could take kitchen out and put supports in behind units but am wondering istead of metal supports like you say could i put a larger square piece of 20mm ply , as it would cover more surface area do you think it would give more support ?

On our old Autoquest 400 the previous owner had fitted a bike rack by just bolting through the back wall and using some big washers on the inside. When it started giving way I fixed it with some ally spreader plates, from memory they were about 4mm thick and 100mm square.

With hindsight they could have been a bit bigger, as they were hidden on the inside, but we never had any problems with the rack coming loose ( 'till I reversed into a tree  )

Cheers for the reply garth ,i think i will go for 4 ally spreader plates on the inside and on the outside like you say a long ally bar for extra support , is there a particular type of ally to use ,is there a difference between ally plate and ally sheet ? and i think 5mm would be thick enough , what do you think ?
cheers ,and i think your right on doing it yourself ,like you say our vans are our pride and joy no matter how old or what state they are in ,and i will be able to do it for a lot less than the quoatedprice of 300 quid , the cash saved will come in handy for our 2 week trip to france at the start of july
cheers guys and take care

padster don't forget to sleeve the bolts as ***** said !!!! 18mm ply with big washers would be suffice as its inside and not open to the elements and a bit cheaper than ali! but using either is cheaper than buying the said kit and the fitting charge lol.
good luck

cheers

A big thanks guys , just ordered some ally plates , 25 quid , so all is go go go ,will have kitchen out next weekend and hopefully rack on and all will be great , espically the extra wonga in my pocket for our french trip
