Add Blue Consumption

Hello all, we’ve just recently changed over to a motorhome after 30+ years tugging a caravan. We really love our our new traveling home but we are using a lot of add blue, I put 25 litres on a trip to NI before heading home to Nth Scotland, we the traveled to clubfest in Leicestershire and had to add another 25 litres, I’ve just arrived to Almeria Spain (1,200miles) and she’s asking for more add blue, the wife says Benie has an add blue shot each time it downs a litre of diesel. She’s a 2020 Fiat Ducato (Benimar Mileo).

We have a 1950cc Vito as a shopping car and it uses about 10 litres every eight to ten thousand miles.
Your consumption seems reasonable. The engine I have is a 2.3 litre,160bhp, I would expect it to use a bit more, but it’s significantly more.

I put two 10 litre tubs in my vw crafter 2.2 when completely empty and the read out on the dash says I should get 6000 miles when full but realistically it gets about 4500 for my 20 litres so to me that works out just over a 200 miles per litre.

I have a 2021 Fiat Ducato 2.3l 140bhp and I’m getting about 1100 miles out of the full 15 litre tank. I even took it back to Fiat for them to check as it seemed excessive usage compared to my VW Tiguan, but they checked it, did a software update and said it’s within their parameters. My son has the same base vehicle and his is using about the same. On top of that I find that the spouts included in the canisters are not long enough to open the metal flap at the entrance to the tank, so I have to wedge it open with a screwdriver or else I lose half the lot onto the ground! 🤬

Thanks, I also saw an post on YouTube video which said the consumption of add blue has increased on newer vehicles as the emission standards are now tougher so the usage I have is not as bad as I thought. Probably also due to the hilly terrain.
I also found it awkward to add the add blue to the Ducato, strange that it took the 25 litres without a spill.

Yoweeeeeeeeeee that is one hell of a lot, you need to get it checked out by a properly trained garage and NOT a motohome dealer.

I could afford a new motorhome but Ad Blue is the reason I will not buy a new one. I would really like a new Fiat or Ford automatic but for me AdBlue is just one step too far on the never ending road of "How many more computers can we stuff into this metal box" syndrome that is endemic in all motor manufacturers' development departments. I realise that AdBlue is an emissions system but it inevitably is controlled by yet another computer which the dealers and manufacturer's representatives cannot fix when it goes wrong. A couple of years ago I took my petrol car to a main franchised Nissan dealer for a service and they told me with a straight face that they had not changed the spark plugs because my car was a diesel, "And diesel cars don't have spark plugs Sir". I don't swear, but I couldn't think of anything else to say. In the end they said they couldn't supply the spark plugs so if I got them, they would change them. then they said they couldn't change them, didn't refund the cost of the spark plugs which was included in the service charge, and I came home and changed them myself on my driveway. I do not have the luxurious workshop with ramps and coffee machines that their workshop has. It was a run of the mill car, not a Ferrari or Bentley or anything exotic.

Remember deiselgate? well that was just the tip of an iceberg, Fiat are desperately trying to get their engines to meet somewhere near the emission's standard they claim, part of this is pumping in more AdBlue.

I have a similar Fiat Ducato 2.3i 140bhp and get similar consumption. Sometimes a bit more, sometimes less. Apparently you consume more per mile at steady speeds on a motorway than per mile at slower speeds around town or on a/b roads. That’s what I’ve been told.

One adblue cost saving tip when filling up adblue. Use the adblue pump at diesel stations, in the HGV fill up area if needs be, and do not buy top up bottles. It is then £1 or so a litre or maybe slightly less, rather than the £8 to £10 or more for a 5 litre top up bottle.

The newer Euro 6 engines use significantly more Adblue than the older Adblue engines. So don't compare to someone not Euro 6. We are Euro 6 and get about 180 miles per litre of adblue. It is linked to diesel usage so if, for example, you drive fast on motorways you will use more.

It may seem a nuisance but remember it significantly reduces the pollution from your driving. Also there are already some areas you cannot drive without it and there will be more of those in the next few years.

Get it from the lorry lanes at some petrol stations if you can, but you have to watch for signs. Or use the 10l tubs avoiding the brands where the filling tube isn't long enough. After a few goes you get used to it.

ERG is one engine technology used to meet Euro 6 standards without Adblue. But I don’t think any vans are using this (yet)? It is used in large engines in lorries etc. So I believe most typical MH will be using Adblue to meet Euro 6. Depends on your base vehicle of course.

Just read that a typical expected usage rate is about 1 litre of Adblue for each 20 litres of diesel used. Seems about right. So for me, I need 10l adblue roughly every four fills of my diesel tank. Never any hurry as when the adblue indicator comes on I can still fill up with diesel another three times before the adblue actually runs out (it hold 19 litres total). I am Ducato based.

If you mean EGR, then Fiat where using it, one of the worst polluting Euro6 engines out there with more than twice the allowed amount of NOx when on the road.
