Not sure where to post this so settled on the knowledge base as it's a problem solved post.
It started out with me wanting to swap my radio for a DAB version.
So down to my local Argos because thats where I found the cheapest readily available one and fitted the radio.Easy enough job with the stick on screen antenna .
Anyone thats done this knows the pitfalls fitting to a motorhome, weak fluctuating reception etc so plan B took it out and it's now in the car.
It may have been coincidence but since then The ABS light came on together with the engine going into limp mode, maximum 2500 rpm together with the speedo not working and the handbrake light on.
Looked on the renault forums(2004 renault master) and went through the usual checks including replacing a dodgy abs sensor cable front nearside.
I also got the faults looked at with my nephews snap-on diagnostic kit and he couldn't see the abs unit to see where the fault may lie.
Gave it a bit more thought and decided it must be a wiring fault to the ABS ECU or the ecu itself.
Down to see a mate who runs a small garage and got a printout of the ecu connector pins and wiring diagram and then went in search of the ecu.
Not so easy to work on the ecu ,it's above the first part of the exhaust.
Up on the levelling ramps to get underneath and it's a straightforward job to undo 2 clips, remove the 1st silencer, remove the heatshield above it and there you can see the abs unit.
It's then a matter of unclipping the ecu connector and getting the multimeter out to test for +ve and -ve connections ,also the cable up to the abd2 plug.
They all tested ok,in fact all the wiring and fuses tested ok.
I'd already found a firm in cullumpton who repaired these units but a phone call to them and I was informed they dont repair the ecu part and advised to try a scrapyard,or a main agent.
Luck was on my side and 1st phone call to a bristol firm(van services) who confirmed they had a unit £60+vat .
Long story short,I replaced the ecu part and problem solved.
Maybe not a job for the faint hearted but working methodically reaps rewards.
The addition to my toolbox was a Topdon diagnostic tool.It was then able to see the abs fault codes (From the 2nd hand unit?)afterwards and clear them, also helped me with another problem with the airbag sensor .Made in china but does the job plus emails the test results if required.
Cheap enough for the home diyer and no expensive main agent fees plus the old mans still got it though not so nippy these days
