Have just returned from a flying visit to see my mother in Carlisle. We left home (Inverness) at 6pm on Monday aiming to stop somewhere on or just off A702 before or after Biggar - we even had some spots in mind but, no.................. it wasn't to be. Ended up on the edge of the village of Crawford off A74. At least it was not far from there to Carlisle on Tuesday morning!
We decided to take the 701 from Moffat northwards after our visit and lo and behold masses of car parks, laybys, pulloffs etc. and although we did not stop the night there there was good car park at Fruid Reservoir just off (3-4 miles) the 701 at Tweedsmuir.
We actually stopped above the far (E) end of the Talla reservoir - but it was not a very level site and I would only recommend it to a small van (we have mwb Renault Master). There might be other spots lower down

I think there is a different mentality in different regions/counties. Borders and Dumfries and Galloway seem to have a more positive attitude towards visitors than Lanarkshire.
