A weighty problem?

When my new MH arrives I'm aware it doesn't have the largest payload around. With this in mind I want to ask 'has anyone been pulled over by VOSA at one of their checkpoints?'

I know the penalties are pretty stiff but I do wonder how frequently MHs are checked and if it's something to really worry about (apart from the insurance perspective)

Any experiences/advice would be welcome.

Vosa m74

We live close to the Scottish border and the M74 which we use often.
The VOSA inspection areas near J44 North bound, and the south bound M74 near Elvanfoot in the border hills, are very rarely open and of all the times we pass when they are open we have never seen MH being checked. The signs are all set up to stop goods vehicles, I think they are more interested in the foreign lorries, but that's not to say they wont get interested in MH.

I personally knew of one Motorhomer that must have been over weight looking at all the items they carry when travelling, but never been stopped.

If you were to be stopped & weighed you could be charged with driving without a license to drive the class of vehicle, and as I understand you will not be allowed to continue until you remove items that are making your vehicle over weight.... may be your partner. :)

YOU HAVE TO DECIDE IF IT'S WORTH THE RISK

Methinks it wouldn't be worth the risk and on the subject of risk .................. When I show your comment about how to ditch ballast to the other half I think it only fair to warn you ............... William Wallace would go weak at the knees with her on the rampage!! Be afraid................ very afraid!

I don't think VOSA have any interest in private vehicles, but I have heard of the police pulling a van because it looked well over weight. They escorted him to a weighbridge then sat with him while he jettisoned vast amounts of junk, into my vehicle, they then reweighed him before letting him go and charging him. The secret is 'pretend you are a flirty young thing and spread the flab about'.

Tough decision!
Less booze, less food or the wife's wardrobe. mmmmmmmmmmm perhaps I'll bring it up when she's in a good mood (could take a while though)

A bigger concern if you are overweight is that it could invalidate your insurance if you are involved in an accident. I would guess that you would still be covered for any third party liability but they might use it to get out of paying for any repairs to your MH.

Have seen MH's pulled over in France & Germany a few times.
