But where do I get the tokens for the machines in France?
We have been going to France for the last 6 years but we have NEVER had to fill our water or empty our toilet at an Aire we usually do some Aires and some sites but this year we are off on Tuesday and only staying on Aires so do you get the tokens from the local village or what plus there are various machines about.
Any information will be gratefully:tongue: received.
Best regards

Jettons (Tokens) are usually available from local shops or the Mairie (Town Hall). You may find some bournes are free and someone calls to collect a fee for you to stay. Others you pay at a barrier to enter. You need different tokens for different makes of bourne. I stayed at one where you paid at the barrier, but the bourne was away from the Aire and you typed in the code from your ticket to get your water. Some bournes will give you 50 litres and others will go to 100 litres. How much you pay does not necessarily dictate how much you get.

Electricity is available at some, but that is intended to assist in pumping out toilet tanks and can be limited to between 10 and 30 minutes for a jetton.

You don't need tokens to get rid of toilet waste.

on some aires where a guy comes to collect the money, the french motorhomers will tell you what time he usually comes.a lot of them take their dogs for a long walk around this time !

You do at some - Decize for example requires a token to unlock the waste disposal hatch and activate the flush. Pretty obvious what this will encourage but, nevertheless, that's what they've done. Maybe they want the town to live up to its name:lol-053:

We do not have a dog so I suppose that we will do as we always do and pay our way lol:D

On Aires where you need a jeton to activate the toilet flush I notice most Frenchmen just take an old refilled 2l water bottle to flush it down with.

We buy a few extra jetons when we see a machine that sells them but inevitably end up with a collection since there are half a dozen different types. Shame they're not standardised really.

Some towns have the jetons for sale in the Tourist Information Office by the way.

see that is the thing they have so many different types of machine so do I need to carry loads of tokens so that I can use all machines? I did once stop at an Aire on a motorway and we could fill up with water there and empty our toilet for free

We Stayed on about half a dozen Aires last year each had a different Jeton, but all had signs clearly saying where you could buy them from. We always got two, and yes still have a couple in the Van, that we will use this year. One was a pay at the Barrier, and one had a Credit / Debit Card machine.

We would get parked up and if needed get the bikes out and go looking for the shop etc

All the Aires book sometimes indicates where you can get tokens, and what machine is there

We have just used our waste water to flush down the bourne after dumping the cassette. You are going to get rid of it anyway so why waste clean drinking water to flush.

EURO-RELAIS is the most common bourne. You do not need to carry large quanties of tokens just get them from a local shop or bar. Allways travel with some drinking water so that you have time to sort yourself out.

One of the best guides to aires is Le Guide officiel étapes touristiques camping-car which is published annually and is available from "Camping Car" magazine, from French supermarkets early in the season.

If you want an English language version All the Aires France, 3rd Edition all the French Aires
Exclusively available from Vicarious Books. If you are going from Dover, Deal is only a short diverson away. We did this when going to Italy in January and wanted a "Sosta" version.
