Hi we have been in France for a month towing the car on an A Frame, no problem with the Gendarmerie, we stayed on Aires except for 4 nights on campsites to give the batteries a charge, there was only one aire where we could not keep the car and just parked it up the road, the most interest was taken by the Germans they where all taking photo's and loved it. what would it be like if all the Germans towed a car:D Hell. Bob.:D

No, because when they do they use a trailer...

With the best will in the World, this has been debated so many times both here and on other Forums.

The Brit Police are just waiting for a chance for a test case: Don't be under any illusions about that. The Frogs, Dagos, Boxheads, Eyties etc tolerate because it is still "legal" to use them in the UK. Are they permitted to their own Nationals and the answer is No.

Dollies and / or A-Frames were designed to move a vehicle a short distance to a place of repair. They were not intended for long distance towing.

If you want to tow safely then put the car on a proper, braked trailer.

I know that we all may do it but it doesn't make it right. Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh

Just to add a larf

From another forum: A couple wanted a little car to go behind their Motorhome and so they bought a little Smart car; nothing wrong with that is there? Low mileage, never raced or rallied? Little old lady used to go down the shops to get some fish for the cat?
Not a bit of it. They had it for only a short while and the transmission went **** up. Turns out that it had been towed and that it had the equivalent of 70k to 80k of mileage on it

Hi baloothebear, it was to let people know that have A Frames fitted that it's not a problem, there are lots of them that have them and are worried about taking them abroad. I may not agree with the fact about being safer on a trailer mine is a : http://www.caratow.com/ as you can see Braked. I have towed a lot over the years and had caravans snake, I have a twin axle trailer which is fine, I had my own lorry for many years and had loads shift even though it was secured with straps, I think towing a car on an A Frame is as safe as it gets, I would say safer than a car on a trailer, I have seen cars on trailers on their side, towing an A Frame follows you, low on the ground does not sway about and you can reverse them, but everyone has their own thoughts on it. Also, when you get anywhere, you dont have to store a trailer. But if people would rather use a trailer that's fine, but as long as I can get away with it I will. The only thing I have read on other sites, was someone towed a smart in drive and blew the gear box, but good luck what ever people do. Bob.:D

What do you do with the trailer when you reach a camp site abroad
also what about the weight of the trailer add that to the cars weight

some sites charge for it as an extra vehicle some insist it is parked off the camping area
no matter what it will either cost money
cause you concern about how safe it is parked out of your view

HI, wELL I have been towing trailers in europe for years, The first was an open motorbike trailer with a quad on it, with this we did have a few faults. In france some sods had a go at removeing the quad, But has it was chained to the trailer and the trailer chained to the towbar they remained empty handed. The 2nd due to the 1st was a boxed trailer with the quad inside. Now due to getting older and wanting to travel a bit further then the quad would take us, I tow a car trailer with smart car load. Last year we went all over germany, austria and italy and only had to leave the trailer out of view once. And this was the time to use wheel clamp and locks. We go away feb to april may time so out of season and have never been asked to pay extra for the trailer.
Yes towing is a pain at times for sure, but being able to stop over at a great place and use the smart to explore makes up for it.
